Why I want the CV40f1.4

But I have other mechanical RF cameras. I can't seem to fully trust electronic cameras.

i never handled electronic camera but i also dont feel them durable enough. i always afraid that those cameras can die anytime even if many poeple say that they are durable as any mechanical camera.

The 40 Nokton was the first lens I bought, the main reason being that it is small, fast, and from what I had seen of it from Sockeyed's photos on flickr with it, I thought it was a good place to start. I can tell you the layout is the same as the PII, with the aperture dial being slightly farther away, and the focus ring is a little thicker, good enough that I can use it to focus without using the tab. The tab is also a little bit larger, I find a bit more secure than what I have with the PII. I'm lucky in that I'm not really hurt for speed while Raid has it (the MC one), I managed a while back to get a nice CLA'd Summarit. For the price and quality you can't go wrong.

I just won one on ebay (MC version) and I don't even know if I want it! It was practically brand new and I just wanted to see if I could get it cheaper than new (which I did). I have the CV35/2.5 PII and the focal lengths seem pretty similar. I love the tiny size of the pancake, but I feel I'm missing out on the speed and narrow DOF, which is why I got the CV40/1.4. However, from looking at the measurements on CQ, the 40mm isn't that much longer than the 35mm; certainly a lot smaller than SLR lenses I'm used to. I wonder if having both lenses is reduntant...

The funny thing is, I don't even have a body to put it on! Hahaha!! The R2 should be arriving shortly, though... :) I'll know pretty soon whether I want one or the other, or both.

I would say that the 35/40mm focal length is a duplication, but the speed of the lenses (and I have the CV35f2.5 too) is the big difference.

Makes perfect sense to me. I like the size and speed of my old pre asph 35 lux and if I were to buy new it would be the VC 40/1.4.

For a 1.4 lens I think the size is pretty much unbeatable. I've handled one at my local dealer and it felt every bit as well built as my 35 2.5.

What I can't work out is why Voigtlander won't make a 35 1.4 that's the same size, with the same ergonomics. That's about the only thing that would make me give up my CV 35 2.5, aside from a mint 4th version 35 Summicron that I couldn't hope to afford.
I realise there's always the 35 Ultron, but I've heard it's soft wide open and there's no focusing tab. :(

The 40 Nokton matches up well to the R-D1's 35mm frame lines and I *believe* I read somewhere that it is closer to 37mm than to 40mm.

It's a dandy little lens and build is more than acceptable IMO. Just wish it brought up the 35 frame lines on the M8 instead of the 50/75

i recently acquired a 40/1.4 mc from another rff member, and it seems to be permanently affixed to my m7. ergonomically this lens reminds me of a lens i had in the past, the summilux 35. this feels good in all respects. eventually i'll probably adjust the mount to bring up 35 lines...

I've been thinking about selling my (mostly unused) 50mm Nokton and buying a 40mm Nokton. If I like it, I may sell the 35mm Ultron as well and then save for the 28mm Ultron.

I'm just not sure I'll like the 40mm over the 35....

Yes :) that is way to go! 40mm as ,,normal'' FOV and 28mm f:1.9 ...
perfect street combo ...

Thanks for your comment, Ravid.

I think that my CV 40/1.4 SC is my all-around favourite lens. Images seem to have a great 'depth' to them, and it is actually fantastic in colour, even though the SC is touted as a great B&W lens (which it is). I like its size, build quality and ergonomics, too. I had the later Rokkor 40/2, and I found the image quality of the CV 40 to be better.

Shortcomings: The bokeh gets 'complex' at f/1.4 with busy backgrounds (but smoothes out at f/2), and there is some light fall-off wide open (but I like that look).

I use it as a 35mm on my M6 and R4M.

Here are a couple of CV 40 images (R3M, Fuji Reala):

Thanks JL. I'm assuming that the focusing tab on the CV40 is similar to the ones on the CV35f2.5 and CV50f2.5. It has got to be bigger than the little knob of the CV25f4!

I haven't used the CV35/2.5 nor the CV50/2.5, but the on the 40/1.4 tab looks like the one on CV35/2.5 pancake II.

I like the push/pull action with the little knob on my CV21/4.

So much for "I'm Content"....

Hey, go for it, Frank! Life's too short to be Jonesin' for something so simple that makes you happy and hurts nobody.

Me?....My next move will be towards a 21/4 CV....

Best Regards!
Don

If I did not have a sharp J-3, I would have been tempted to get 40mm/1.4MC based on the work Roalnd and I have been doing recently.

Now I'm thinking my CV40/1.4 SC is lonely. After I got my CV50/2 Heliar Classic, I can't seem to bear the thought of taking that lens off my R3A. That lens just seems to fit my brain well.

OH! I know the solution. I need to get another camera body! ;)

sockeyed - wow that Fuji Reala looks great! fantastic shots. this looks like a great replacement now that uc100 & uc400 are discontinued in 120

i love my nokton sc on the r4a and the rd1. the little focus 'wing' is far nicer than the ultron 'stick' (or nothing at all). the bokeh is nice (as everyone has said, except when you get lots of stuff behind it).
also, the optech mini hood hat fits nicely with the hood on.
