why is there no perfect bag?

What's wrong with me? I've had the Hadley Pro for almost five years now - it's still the perfect bag for the rangefinder kit.

perhaps they're not sold in the Americas? ... I agree, they are perfect enough :)

The trouble with reality: perfection can only be approached, never achieved.

In recent years, my interest in camera bags has gradually waned. The specialty bags are just ridiculously expensive and the more padding and pockets you get, the less versatile the bag actually is. Pockets and internal padding add dead weight and make it hard to stuff large or unusually shaped things in. They only make sense if you have a delicate kit with many pieces - like a large format set with multiple lenses, film holders, etc.

90% of my camera-carrying time I only take one small camera with one or two lenses, so I just stash it in a random, got-it-from-a-conference shoulder bag that also holds my laptop, papers and random everyday stuff. I have a smaller non-photo shoulder bag for times when the laptop is needed. Occasionally, a winter hat serves as padding between things.

I think we are missing the forest for the trees. This is a perfect opportunity for Joe to become a top bag designer/seller. Seriously.

Just because there are a lot of bags out there does not mean that all design options have been explored and put on the market.;)

I'd suggest that you'll never find perfection if you look for it in "stuff", gear, or consumer items. It can be fun to get new gear and other items, but it gets depressing too, to continually cycle through new stuff looking for the next big thing to make you happy.

What you already own is probably more than adequate, IMHO.

Every time Joe starts a bag thread a butterfly brushes it's wings against a steel sphere the size of a soccer ball ... when that steel ball has completely worn away Joe may still not have found the ideal camera bag!

Ha! That's a good one, Keith.:p

I would seriously buy a bag designed by Joe... in a heartbeat. His comments and suggestions have been good, I think, and not too hard to implement.

I hereby offer my services for beta testing.:)

Are haters allowed in this thread? :D.

I have 5 camera bags and none of them are perfect. I switch them off depending on the kit that I am carrying. I think that all the bags are all fine - I am the imperfect creation that can't seem to find true happiness:rolleyes:.

The problem is not that there aren't any perfect bags, but that there are too many! I just settled on two perfect bags and don't worry about it anymore :)

If you want to know, they are a Domke F6 and F2, and with a little reconfiguring from time to time, I've used them very successfully for carrying various outfits, from a 35mm rangefinder up to a 4x5 field camera kit.

Totally agree with this.

"F2 (Domke) and be there."

Now let's do the hand-wringing about something else... how about... Film vs Digital ??

if combining good features from different bags, what would be the mix of Back Alley Bag?

guess I've been fortunate to be able to adapt almost any kind of bag, even plastic one :p

No perfect person -> no perfect camera -> no perfect bag

I have just as many bags as most folks on RFF, but I've noticed that every time I travel or go out on a photo-specific daytrip, I always grab the same bag -- one I've had for a few years: a Lowepro Street & Field Reporter 300AW. It's certainly not perfect, but I always seem to gravitate towards this one. Now, I'm sure a lot of folks here can relate to that.

right now i am in the search for a canvas book bag, one that i can put an insert (that i have) into.

i don't want padding or lots of pockets, just one big empty space for an insert.
something like a domke 802 but without outside pockets, no top zipper and a big top flap.
