The eye is a fixed focal length lens, so it naturally follows that it likes to get used to one focal length and work with that.
If you work with one focal length you begin to see in that focal length and your images becomes consistent, and consistency is the first step to improving quality.

I am absolutely not a 1-1 type of person but sometimes it happens to me that I cannot produce what I want and, exactly because I have many cameras, lenses, lights and so on, I get into a gear changing routine which add chaos to confusion. Usually, when I get back to my mind and use what I always used for a certain type of picture I get much better results. I guess that something similar might happens to other people too, and that might be a reason for the birth of the 1-1 myth. Also, when traveling sometimes a lot of gear really gets into your way to taking pictures, especially these days that photographers are often regarded as terrorists wanna-bes. Finally, even if it is not good for picture taking I can only agree that 1-1 is good for your back...

Sorry. It's just one of my hang-ups. And, given that you are not a man to be swayed by poor arguments, I suspect it may now become one of yours...
As for cars and motorcycles, no, there's not much likelihood of my driving a '72 SWB station wagon much like an R100RS!

Less is more, this might sound cliched but its true. When you stop thinking about when to change lens or which zoom range to use, you're suddenly left with all the possibilities that only that one focal length offers, all angles and so on.

All of my personal work is done with a MM and a 35 lux FLE. Everything. For me it just simplifies everything and I really learn to see with that lens and camera. Someone said to me you surely miss shots and I said no I just learn to see different shots. I also find it just the opposite of limiting. It just works for me and the way I shoot but there are many others that have found this approach works much the same way I have. But I wouldn't call it anything but what works best for each photographer.

Is it not just an attraction to the idea that simplicity is easier.
Just like monogamy seems attractive. In practice it's not easy or often even practical to hold ones thoughts and desires in one place.
If we never had to contemplate "the grass is always greener" life would be less complicated.
If one could shoot with one lens for everything it would be much simpler to travel, store the kit, maintain the kit, etc.. This photographic monogamy idea is attractive.
Even though it simply does not work perfectly every time, I do go out with one lens often and, enjoy the freedom of having less to keep track of.

Its what works best for each individual. I mean there were a lot of photogrpaphers that preferred to shoot with one F/L.
Winogrand shot with several lenses but preferred the 28.
Gibson was a more normal F/L kinda guy but he two preferred one F/L. He said it matched the way he sees naturally.
Robert Frank also preferred one F/L

For the me a the moment its an M8 and 28mm +75mm when I want something that's easy to carry around all day. And A Crown Graphic loaded with HP5+ or FP4+ sitting on a tripod when I'm shooting at static location(s).

Using famous photographers to prove a point on the internet is so tiresome and crud that its not really wroth replying to. I have been guilty of it in the past as well...
But then again who cares what Gene Smith did, what YOU think?
