Why would one get 35/1.7 Ultron?

Well, I came across a lot of posts where people ask about this lens. Let me tell you - it's Great!!!!!
I have about 8 50mm lenses, 3 85mm lenses, and 1 (ONE) 35mm lens. And it's CV Ultron 35/1.7. I like it so much I really can't find a reason to get anything else in this FL. Maybe I have a good sample of it, but I know I'll keep it. Black finish is beginning to wear off a bit, but glass and mechanics are SUPER!!

The Ultron's generally considered equal to a pre-aspheric Summicron - which is very high praise indeed - The Summi. being the absolute classic it is.

Unfortunately, early Ultrons had a problem with the front lens group unscrewing from the mount, and the bad rep. was further enhanced by one dealer who quoted a very high price to fix what most felt should be a warranty issue (even worse, it turned out the fix was simple enough to be within the capability of most handy do-it-your-selfers).

You still sometimes see posts to the effect that the lens "falls apart", and I guess we really should encourage that myth so the price stays low.😉

She is a fine lens, no question about it. I replaced mine because I wanted a bit more speed and so I went with the 40/1.4. Otherwise, I would still be using her. She is not SUPER small, but reasonable when you look at the speed she brings to the table. She's kind of like a middle child. Not quite as fast as the 35/1.2, not as small as the 35/2.5. A great all around lens, but as many here seem to have multiple of the same focal length, often they go small and then go razor or fast or look.

I happen to find, for me, the 40/1.4 is a better lens for me. If the 40 never came to market, I would be fine and happy with the 35/1.7. There are a lot of folks on this list that would love to have the have the ability to own more than one of any given focal length. I look at you having 8 50mm lenses and wonder why. I am sure you can tell me why and have sound reasoning, which is wonderful and good. The only way we learn is by listening to others, their thoughts and opinions. You may look a the kit I carry (15/40/105) and think that the spread is way too wide, but for me it's great.

The 35/1.7 is a fine lens, had some problems at first, but they were easily rectified. She's a middle child who, unlike the 35/2.5 PII has not been updated. If you are a 35mm person who for what ever reason (e.g. funds, want) has but one to pick, it is a great pick. Not to big, not too slow, not to expensive, sharp and a fine choice.

The only lens I bought with my bessa R2a and the only lens I'll need. I simply love it. Its fast, not big, not tiny (I hated the focusing knobs on my Yashica Electro GSN so buying a lens with a focusing wheel was important to me), its sharp, the bokeh or whatever you want to call it is lovely and creamy, and build quality is great. Really have no complaints whatsoever (taking the hood off makes it a perfect size for a lens IMO). You can see almost 150 examples of it in My bessa flickr set:

I have an ultron arriving any day now. I can't wait for it. I like the 35/2.5 CS I have now, but it seems almost too sharp at times. I have to say though, that I'm pretty close to just grabbing a 35/1.2. I love the signature of it, it seems so glowy. The 40/1.4 has some of that too, but I think I prefer the 35mm focal length. But I'm excited to give the ultron a test. It's just all about the waiting now...

It's a great lens and these are good examples. It also has great bokeh
wide open.

Its only enemy in my bag is the 40/1.4 because it's half a stop faster
and smaller.

Well, I wonder why I have 8 50mm lenses sometimes too. And yet - I always find a reason to keep them. IMO each has it's own unique singature and they are not terribly expensive so .......I just keep'em and keep getting more. Maybe one day I'll start selling them, but for now - I somehow manage to find use for all of them. Look at this thread, where I show several examples from different lenses:

How about if you need a 35mm screw mt and want a modern lens?
