Wife dropped my Nikon F5

the prism is 80. I doubt very much I could score an F5 for 80 unless it was at a local garage sale and the person had no idea what it was. I have gotten very lucky with ebay in the past but I have never found a bargain in person yet.

That's it. We should put our toys back in our toy chest when done with playing.

Long ago, before I insured the ones I use, I dropped a camera in the bag, a couple feet on the prism, denting the top.

I did a quick check for x sync, and shot a job, the images were clipped on one end, the drop put the shutter off a bit, and looking down in the VF, you could detect a tiny chip in the prism, so it got a new top and shutter adjustment, prism got some black paint.

Not an F5, but check the shutter speeds, check the metering, see if the prism was cracked, chipped, etc. and thank your lucky stars you can cheaply replace one of the best film cameras made for virtually a song. I dropped an F3, landing on the bottom, and the prism was chipped. I sent it in for inspection and repair.

Dealers immediately remove straps when they take a used camera in, too easy to drag them and others off the counter on to the floor.

The asking prices at the last show on excellent condition F5s was $250, with no offers, one was mine.

If you use the camera, you should pick up a back up, you might wake up one day with all the give away priced excellent ones gone from the market or hard to find.

I think Howard's might have even been in the box?

My physics is rusty and was never very good (my martian probe would have a high probability of planet surface intersect at a low angle trajectory). By all means, corrections welcomed!

AA battery (Alk): 23g x 8 = 184g + No strap, no film: 0g
Total mass = 1394g
Height of fall: 70cm
Gravity: 9.8m/s^2

Speed at impact: sqrt(2*9.8*.7) = 3.70 m/s or 13.33 km/h or 8.26 mi/h
Time until impact: 3.7/9.8 = 0.38 s
Energy at impact: 1.394*9.8*.7 = 9.56 joules or 7.05 ft·lb

It help s to have a friend who can actually check the shutter speeds.

It's been a long time since I shot gray cards and checked with a densitometer.

I would think a good scan of a gray card shot might tell you something, but, that film has great latitude for over exposure, you might shoot a roll of E6 chrome, or ask around for someone who can check the shutter.

Any good repair shop should have the kit.

C'mon! Things like that just happen! And wait to see what will happen when kids come around.
I had a few cameras ruined by my son. Pissed when realized that, smiled when developed that film with his face caught in the act. 🙂 I can buy another camera and I wish I can get my son to like photography.
My wife does not care at all about my cameras. She would like to have them displayed in our living room, but I think otherwise.

Check the groundglass which could fall out of alignment, the F series Nikons were build to withstand almost anything. At least drops to the floor during assignments. Maybe your wife loves the F5 and you surprised her fondling the camera 🙂
