Will it be OK to use a wide angle lens hood on a standard lens?

I'm about to buy some 49mm metal lens hoods to fit my standard lenses. The ones I've bought in the past are quite deep, which can cause some problems when I try to fit my gear in my camera bag. I bought a 49mm hood to fit my 28mm wide angle from Heavy Star, and this has a shallower profile. I'm assuming that it should be OK to use the same hood on a standard 50mm lens because the field of view for a standard lens is narrower than for a wide angle.

Is my logic correct or am I missing something which means I should by a hood that is specifically designed for a standard lens.

It is better than using no lens hood at all. When the front element of the lens is recessed, then a wide angle lens hood for a longer lens would be enough protection from flare.

Unless you want vignetting (hood too narrow) or ghosts (hood too wide), you need to use the proper hood. Period. And if it does not fit in your bag, get a bag that fits your gear.

Actually, I purchased a rectangular 49mm Pentax lens hood from B&H intended for a 50mm lens that works very well on my Olympus 28mm lens with no vignetting. With a 46-49mm step up ring it also works on my Mamiya C330.
