Will M6/M7/MP drop in the near future?

My collector question concerns the R-D1. It has sold only in limited numbers -- some rumors have that about 2500-3000. And it's the very first digital rangefinder, with some pretty unique retro features. Will it be a collector's item in, say, 15 years?

I think people moving towards an M8 will be more inclinded to unload their dSLRs while they still can get decent money for them, and they know they will find far less use for those dinosaur cameras after they have the M8.

But yes, there will probably also be some selling off secondary late M bodies, but I somehow think they will be M6/M7s rather than MPs. This will probably only last for a short period of time, then I think price will climb up a bit again.

Dinosaurs.......!

The camera buying public vote with their wallets and on that basis the DSLR is a huge success. I guess there are a lot of people out there who want to shoot macro and don't want to be restricted to a 135mm focal length.

As for M6/7 and MP prices ... I don't think the M8 will have any effect on their value at all. What will effect their value will be the future availability and price of film and processing costs ... but let's not go there again. 🙄

M7 and earlier may rise as unless the M8 is a real success Leica Cameras may (develop a) fold(er)...

When an artist dies the prices rise, as the speculators buy in, hand on to your M and IIIxs...

Ok, since we're talking about prices, what's the price a very good/mint condition M6(standard, 0.72) is currently going for? I know ebay is usually a good place to check this but since I don't like buying on the bay I'd rather know what they go for on forums like this one 🙂

Since everyone seems to agree that, if prices should drop, they will only drop temporarily I'd like to know what to keep my eyes open for. If I see one for a good price I might just have to buy earlier than I intended.

I think of the exact opposite...the prices will tumble, give the M8 a few months, as a matter of fact I bet a 43mm filter($5.00) by Jan. 2007 you can buy a M6 for $500-$600
Anyone willing to take my bet?

I have seen them on ebay for $800 to $900...refer to these examples:

Have some patience and you'll get one cheap.

MP will probably stay high but not so sure about the M7 prices. I think that maybe those M7 owners are going to look at moving on to the M8 and so will try to off load those cameras. Do not look for any great deals until after the intial demand for the M8 has been met though. MP, M4-3 owners are less likely to sell IMHO. They have purchased those particular cameras for reasons beyond attaining a "Leica" with aperture priority and some level of automation. M6 owners are a toss up if they unload there camera bodies or not. M5 owners will most likely hold on to their cameras. I am speaking in generalities of course but that is the way I see these next few months.

I hope time will prove you right 🙂

I actually already decided to wait a little more. It was very nice of Ted to offer but I'm going on a trip to Paris in a couple of weeks and can't afford to spend extra money on a Leica right now.

Of course, an MP would be my first choice if it wasn't for the price but I'll gladly settle for a M6 or M7 if the prices really come down that much. I don't care much whether or not the prices of earlier M bodies come down because, although I do appreciate nice gear, I only need one body and it should be a metered one.
