I'm almost out. I have 60 exposures left (one 24 and one 36). Tri-X has become my favorite film due to its versatility. This film can do anything. In about two weeks I'll have some more...but until that time it's HP5 and TMY for me. Don't know what I'm going to do...

Not really, though.

So yeah, Tri-X is almost gone. That's saved for later experiments. Anyone done HP5 in Rodinal? Or TMY? I know that it's going to be grainy no matter what I do, but what is the quality of the grain? Is it pleasant? If all else fails I have my D76 to fall back on, but I'd really like to try Rodinal out with something other than my TMX.

TriX in D76, or for increased speed in Diafine, rules. Save the Rodinal for slower film. It may be conventional wisdom, but it's wisdom for a reason.

Yeah, the Tri-X is going to be used in one of two things: D76 or Diafine. The 24 exposure roll is the one that I plan to push process a bit for some night shots with friends...probably to 6400 or so. It'll be done in Rodinal (so it's purposely grainy) in the semi-stand method that was used by the member here to push it to 12,800. I could use D76 or something else, but the minimal agitation seems to work out well. Though that shot was done in decent light, I'm curious to see how it works with shots from around a fire.

My HP5 and TMY are another matter. They're expired, first of all. I figure that D76 would probably be best for the job. My TMX, however, may work well in Rodinal.

I suppose I'll experiment a bit with the TMX. D76, Diafine, and Rodinal will be my developer choices for a while...I should be able to come up with negatives that look the way I want with one of those three.

what Frank said. And the HP5 will be fine in D76. 7 1/2 minutes in stock developer should be just fine. Got to 22 minutes at 1+3 for more sharpness.

I think my main problem is going to be the TMX (ISO 100 TMAX) that I have. I disliked it in D76 so I haven't touched my stash...I knew Diafine wouldn't work very well either so I didn't bother to shoot any. Now that I'm getting some Rodinal I may start shooting it again...may even try pushing or pulling it. Should be fun.

The 100 TMax would probably be good in Rodinal, though I've never tried it.

"..may even try pushing or pulling it. Should be fun."

Now, how did I know you were going to say that? 🙂

I've tried the Delta 100 in Rodinal and it works well. 100 TMax should probably be similar.
Rate it at 100 and try 1+75 Rodinal for 19 minutes.

What don't you like about TMX in D76?

I've been playing around with TMX and Delta 100 lately. The grain structure in the former gives an appearance of being unsharp. However, it's the fine grain, not an actual loss in resolving power. Not surprisingly, you can increase acutance with TMX without a big price in grain. I haven't tried it in Rodinal, though. I am trying both films in ID-11 1+3 now.

Well, there was a thread here elsewhere (or was it on APUG?) about HP5 in Rodinal; I think dilution and agitation regime made big differences. Haven't tried it myself, though. But HP5 in D76 or similar developers is a pretty good combo. I liked it in FG-7, which is a "fine grain" developer but more highly diluted than D76, hence (IMO) better acutance. But you don't have FG-7 at hand, so that's not an option.

The medium speed films (at least with traditional grain structure) should all be good in Rodinal. My last roll of APX 100 in Rodinal looked very nice.

Sure have! Just a couple days ago, as a matter of fact! This was HP5 @ 1+50 for 20 minutes. Grainy but not bad. Much better than the Delta 400 I did at 1+25.

For me, tested speed of Tri-X (older version) was 200 in HC-110 dilution G. I found the same in FG-7, and IIRC correclty, the same or close with Rodinal. IMO, nearly all B&W films are overrated by the manufacturers, at least for proper Zone III detail. That's not to say I didn't really like merciful's TX at 12,800... it was stunning!
