Window Street Photography ~ Try Something New And Grow!

Multiple mirror and glass reflection...this gentleman was actually seated to the right of the frame.

This has been done since Atget (though of objects at that time)... 100 years ago. I love it too.. especially in any big city. Anyone who knows me knows I love photographing windows. The article is too beginner oriented though.

An early master of this kind of photography is Saul Leiter. It was a technique he frequently used with great skill

Photos taken thru glass need not only be of people. The reflections themselves can be interesting. Here the interior of the building melds with the reflections to make something that looks vaguely like a Kandinsky painting - verticals and horizontals and blobs of color.

Or the photos need not strictly speakng be street photos. A wide range of photos shot thru glass can be interesting and impressionistic.

These people are on private property, you may be on a public street, howver. I wonder how this affects the laws?
There are some lovely shots in this series.

As I understand it, in most comon law countries the state of the law is that if people are on private property but are able to be readily seen from a public area, like a road or a street then the legal position is much the same as if they were on public land themselves.

Actually in Australia, it is indeed considered an invasion of privacy if you take a photograph of someone on private property EVEN if you are on public land. It's a simple as that, the same in the UK, Hong Kong, Mainland China, the USA and every EU country. If they were outdoors, say in a front garden, no judge will give it the time of day, but shooting through a window - into a building is a completely different kettle of fish.

I would be really careful if I were you, especially those of you with minors in your pictures, software exists which enables you to search the internet for your face in pictures, I use it daily in my job. It's getting quite good and I bet google will update their picture search to include this functionality in the near future.
