I went with option three. Though it affects my hands to the point of not being able to handle a camera, at least the cold weather keeps the mosquito population in suspended animation for a few months.

Nothing like going into a turn knowing you are going to start to slide and knowing how to get through it without wrecking your car. Makes you feel all warm and cuddly inside. Winter rules.

And then you encounter a soccer mom going in opposite direction, while on a cell phone and having no idea how to get through the same turn. Yes, it does rule. 😀

Great deal Cal - as to the heat, why don't you arrange for a move to Florida?
Where I live now, winter is not a big thing ( this year has been a bit wet, but lowest temperature I have seen, was +10C/50F), on the other hand, it gives you some cloudy days good for landscape photography - the rest of the year is predominantly sunny.

Having left Indiana at the age of 18, I have never understood why anyone would willingly live in the land of snow and ice. This is what it looked like in Atlanta yesterday (2-24-2014).

I left the rust belt when I was 19 and swore I'd never return... I did pretty well... stayed away for 25 years... did Florida, NoCal, Guam, SoCal, and then NoCal again... and then about 15 years ago I moved back. What I found out is that the cold weather keeps the riff-raff out.😀

I live in Quebec, Canada. I love winter. Short days with a very nice light, the fireplace always in service with the good smell of maple wood bruning in it. I do cross-country skiiing, skating, alpine skiing. I'm always outside, almost in better shape than in summer.

The winter has been a bit cold this year and has been longer then I would have liked. I enjoy building model's sometimes and use spray paint outside and I can't do it below 50F.
Also some of the wind chill keeps me cooped up inside.

Basically three reasons: unlikely to replace my job; NYC is kinda my home and I want to make the most of my time here while I can; and thirdly my gal's kinda old to switch jobs.

I was down in Savannah Ga. last year scoping that place out when I do retire. No place like NYC though. I'm trying to tough it out as long as I can. The physical fitness really fought off the fatigue/depression I had last year. Ideally I hopefully can be a New York snow bird if I can tough it out and then retire a life of no compromise.

I can't understand why anyone would live in the southern states. Here in southern Indiana, the last two summers have brought us multiple day stretches of 90-95F or hotter temperatures with a few hellish days of 105-106F thrown in for good measure. Not to be outdone, I visited a friend in Nashville (TN) last summer where it was "normal" for them to have temps in the 110-115F range.

To extrapolate that out, Atlanta must be in the 120-130F range during the hottest days of the summer. 😱 No, thanks.

I like winter and snow - when it's in the 25-30F range. Those have been the "warm" days for us this winter, though. When it's 0-10F outside with 15-25 MPH winds, it's official:
Winter sucks out loud.

It appears that there is no middle way in terms of weather and temperatures these days; we are either subjected to sub-arctic conditions or to the heat of Lucifer's waiting room.

This brings me to my question for Mother Nature: Can't we all just get along?? 🙄

Pretty easy here in Seattle if I'm honest about it.
The NW gets a reputation for lots of rain.
We get it ... sure but, less precipitation than most major cities east of the rockies (including NY).
This winter was pretty mild. The tulips are pushing up and crocuses are in full bloom.
All that said I would rather live in Central America from Jan-March 😀
Winter is not good.

Anybody who lives in the Great Lakes area of North America is suffering through the coldest winter in 20 years. We’ve experienced below-normal temperatures since October. We’ve already surpassed the yearly average snowfall total in my small town. Lake Superior is about 90% frozen over. There’s also a propane shortage so those who live in rural areas and rely on propane for heat are really in a bind. So yes, this year I hate winter.

I don't like winter. I hate being out in the wind and the cold and I have a very hard time photographing because of the discomfort. I like shadows and there is a lot less sunlight in winter. Snow changes the look of everything and I just don't like to shoot photos with snow. We also have more air pollution in winter and can get very nasty and unhealthy for weeks at a time. Fortunately we have had a very mild winter this year. - jim

It is what it is.

Born here.

Received a stipend to move back when I received my honorable discharge from the Navy in Long Beach CA in the 1970s.

Still here.

Every place has good features and some that could improve. If our weather was like LA we'd have more freeways and a lot more people. Our daughter lives near Pasadena (La Canada) and, over the weekend, the family went to a place to see and play in snow.

Temp. as of 1:30 PM today in Minneapolis, Tuesday 2/25/2014:

4°F
-16°C

Well, there is winter and there is winter.
The first one (cold, freezing but sunny with blue sky and loads of snow) is great!
The second one (mild, wet, rainy, grey and dull) is terrible.
This year we had the second type. 🙁

Here in Atlantic Canada we are having the longest spel of winter cold I can remember. We normally expect some cold days, but some 50 F days too, between the middle of December and the middle of February. NOT THIS YEAR. We seemed to have moved from a maritime to a continental climate this winter.

One bright spot...we bought an electric car (Nissan Leaf for intra city trips) in the fall. It has had its trial by fire, or more correctly trial by ice, and it has worked out extremely well on the coldest days when our gas guzzler wouldn't turn over.

I've been living in Mauritius for some years and there's really a thing they call 'winter' over there. It´s much like Luxembourg summers!

I loved it!

Winter's good for a change but not over 4 weeks!

I really liked Costa Rica. 80% of the country is on a 3,000 foot mesa so for most of the country the weather is eternal springtime even though it is the tropics just north of Panama. The locals say, "Its so cold," if it dips below 65 degrees, and they say, "Its so hot," if the temperature goes over 80 degrees.

In the rainy season it rains, but eventually the rain stops and the sun comes out.

After twenty something years in a semi-tropical climate, I was practically traumatized by the European winter: super short days and cold cold cold. Last year's winter was very unusual and lasted almost 8 months.

This year the weather in France has been downright mild most of the time. The dogwoods have started blooming six weeks early.
