Probably refers to flashbulbs as Mazda was a brand of lightbulbs and flashbulbs in Europe long before it was a Japanese car.

I'm sure that's right - although in the context of an extinction meter I'd suggest it probably indicates "artificial light".

Just out of interest, Mazda (properly Medha) is the Vedic word for "wise", part of the name of the principle of light (Ahura Mazda - "Lord of Wisdom") in Zoroastrianism. The founder of the bulb makers were followers of a fashionable mystical diet guru called Dr Otoman Ha'nish, who advocated self-denial and "special breathing" - a syttem he called Mazdaznan: they named the company after it!

Yes, Mazda was the GE brand and standard for the early tungsten filament lights. Can't think of anything else.
