The lack of self timer indicates it's not a M4 but more a M4-p or a M4-2 with a brass top plate.

Rogue,
Congratulations on your purchase, I think i'd dig a camera like that! I'm in the same boat as a couple of the other posters. I bought an M6 that was in "good" condition but wound up in my opinion being new minus the box. I do baby it and found myself looking for a shooter. I just won a user M4-P and am more anxious to get it than I was the 6. Long live shooters!

That's a black M4-2 from '78 with the top and bottom plate exchanged. Viewfinderlever, rewind and hotshoe indicates black. There is no red dot, so M4-2.
My guess is that the hotshoe and rewind are original, so the serial on the shoe is correct.

It's officially on its way to Youxin - who also thinks its an M4-2 with an m4 top plate.
wiht a recover and a CLA - this should be a very good shooter indeed. I'm pretty happy - despite wierdness in the sale (the seller did give me something of a break in the end, and honestly, I had no desire to cancel out the sale anyway).
Thanks all for your feedback, tips, concern and help.

Ebay is a friend and enemy indeed!
Oh well, if it checks out mechanically that's still still right in the ballpark for an M4-2/M4-P, so it's not a rip off.
Enjoy!
No it wasn't.
Unless a seller claims to be an expert in the field, guarantee or warranty offered of some sort, there is no burden on them and there is no if it is written "M4" with marker-pen on the top. People need to take responsibility for their actions. Unless , buyer beware. That simple.
So tired of people screaming "fraud"...everyone wants something for nothing. Let's use our heads and 5min (literally) of research online.
The hot shoe and rewind knob are, um, black!? .. of course obvious giveaways. Lack of self timer, obviously not an M4 (as mentioned).
I truly hope you enjoy the camera and all works out, but it is an obvious "frankencamera" (as they call it). I mean come on...
I don't wish to say more and be a wet blanket, but it looks pretty rough out and inside.
Guy/gal got a good price considering. I'd prefer an M3 user myself for a tad more.
Sorry, wet blanket, I know.
Do not wish to appear harsh. I realise the fellow is not complaining regarding his impulse purchase, but internet talk spreads like wildfire, and this is not fair for the seller..a pawn shop jewelry seller?!
come on guys....you know better...use your heads.

The camera was not actually an M4 and should not have been advertised as one. Simple as that.demian said:No it wasn't.

Listen, it's probably going to bug the hell out of you if the camera isn't right. Bite the bullet and see if Youxin has the right top plate. If not Dag has one. For less than a hundred bucks you'll sleep at night. You can always pick up a bottom plate down the road. Plenty of people use beater bottom plates anyway and keep the original one nice. A Youxin tune up, new skin, new top plate and you'll be a happy camper. Stu

As an extra pick me up, change the winder and the preview to the M3 style.

Nah - I'd much rather have the M4 top-plate that's on it, rather than the m4-2 plate with the crappy lettering. It may eventually bug me that its not actually an M4 - but I'll cross that bridge later.
I will at some point swap out to m3 style levers - but for now I'm just going to enjoy it. I shoot. So as long as everything works as it should - I'm pretty easy to please.
Youxin has not yet sent me an email with a status report - I assume it's either just arrived, or in transit still.

I absolutely agree. This was my mistake.
The seller and I had a good laugh. I educated him a bit on things I should have noticed, and how to tell apart the models, and ate my humble pie. He was kind enough to knock off a bit from the price - and we both went home happy.
Once it arrives at Youxin, the seller will get positive feedback from me.

Until this mess I really didn't know anything about the M4-2. I looked the camera up and except for the lack of the cult status of the M4, everything I read was pretty positive after a specific serial #-which your's is after. I'm sure after Youxin gives it a massage and a new set of clothes you'll be a happy camper. Keep us updated. Stu

didn't see this the first time around. i was actually thinking of bidding on it, just cuz it doesn't have a self-timer or battery compartment on the right side, and would look so great painted black.

Youxin finished it up and shipped it to me the other day.
It arrived today - a bit ugly - but in perfect working order. Sounds gorgeous, very smooth with a nice viewfinder.
I haven't decided if I'll keep it - after all that. Money got tight this season - I'm tempted to sell it before I get used to it. Besides, I need to get M adapters for my lenses still - so we'll see.

Ayahyayee....the joys of impulse buying...
Well, at least it all worked out for you.
Yes, stay away from it if you are contemplating selling it. You will never be able to part with it once you being using it.
Either way, it is all rather phtog Karma, no? LOL
Someone in the heard will be getting/using a great camera..lol
We crack myself up. We are all too similar. Frighteningly so!
Already feeling the pull myself..I kid you not!
Happy Holidays!
