Would a Plustek be an upgrade?

Hi all.

I am thinking of upgrading my scanner. I currently have an orginal Minolta Scan Elite F-2900 with ICE. It is a nice scanner - 12 bit and 2820 dpi. This orginal version was a fixed focus scanner. It is SCSI. I have used it a lot. (Actually I also have a second scanner for parts, but this scanner never broke down!)

I got a new lap top and interfacing SCSI with it is not so easy. I would have to get a SCSI USB adapter or a SCSI PCIMIA adapter plugged into a PCIMIA Expresscard adapter. RIght now I am using it on my old desktop, but my laptop is so much faster.

I was looking at the Plustek 7500 as a possible upgrade. What do you think? Or could you suggest another scanner in the <$500 price range?

A couple of things to keep in mind are:

1) I only shot 35mm (or half frame) with no interest of getting into Medium Format photography.

2) I shoot negative film 98% of the time. I might dabble with slide film, but I don't see myself shooting it a lot.

3) I can see myself using half frame more.

So, should I just look for an adapter and keep my old faithful SCSI Scan Elite, or is it worth look to upgrade to a Plustek or another scanner? And how much of a difference would I see (especially on half frame)?
