I have fallen in love with my fed 2 type "d"'s. I really dislike the ethsetics of the later models, I dislike the self timer on the front, and on the fed 3, i dislike the slab style top. I do like the winding lever on the top, and I want to add one to one of my Fed-2 cameras. Can it be adapted? If it could, would anyone have a parts camera they would be willing to sell me the film advance assembly from? I would not want to buy a "new" camera (fed-3) and gut the parts out, that seems somehow wrong.

Great idea! But I don't think it's feasible because there isn't enough space underneath the top plate of a Fed 2d to fit all the components required for a lever wind. Comrade Stoisha's site is a good indicator of possible FSU mods.

I have a fed 3 with curtain problems but apart from that in good working order.

je2a3, I have seen the winder arrangement on other fsu camera like the Zorkie 6 and it looks like it might fit, I see what you mean about the FED-3 wind perhaps not fitting, I will have to find an exploded view.
Bercie, I am currently in the USA. Bercie, does your camera back have the relief groves that slope in to the flip up release levers? The pic is here.

Alex photo has 3 parts cameras for $6 BIN + $22 shipping you might consider that includes a Fed3b and Zorki 5 both lever wind. If you are successful with the conversion post some pics and tips here. Good luck!

I'd have to agree with je2a3. I don't think there's enough space. But nothing is impossible. Good luck if you wanna give it a try.
I have a FED 2 (type b) and had a Zorki 6. I prefer the film advance knob instead of the lever. But that's just me.

Je2A3, the link you provided was wonderful.. This man clearly knows his "stuff". I notice his email does not work, though. Does anyone have an updated one, or know of another camera mechanic I might address?

Je2A3, I just looked at your gallery, and find myself fairly intimidated. Your Alley print is beautiful. You have a gift.

Thanks for the kind words! I'm in a Leica II/Summar phase at the moment and was testing what the camera/lens combo can do.....

For anyone still following, thank you.
I have recieved a few emails, and the concensus is:
Refitting a fed2 with a winder is possible.
However, refitting a fed2 would require quite a bit of work (a totall redesign of the winder
) and money (machine shops practically charge admission
),
and a fed3 is much cheaper. Heck, I will reward myself for taking your kind and constuctive advice by buying a Zorkie 6, and will save a fortune by not re-inventing the wheel.
Thanks again,
Roland.
