Would u believe a dp3m?

As some of the commenters said, a fixed-lens compact with a 75mm 2.8 macro that will cost $1000 just doesn't make sense, no matter how sharp the lens is. If it had the Sigma OSS built in that light make some difference, but this seems like a really extreme form of specialization, sort of like a Leica MD. If the lens were faster (e.g. 50/1.4) then you could possibly see it being marketed as a "pocket portrait camera" or something along those lines but I think someone got their wires crossed in this leak (especially with mention of a 7fps burst).

If Sigma released a DP3m-M with an M-mount and a slightly bigger body to accommodate a battery with reasonable life they'd sell all they could make - especially if they re-engineered the existing 19mm and 30mm lenses with M-mounts and added some electrical contacts for AF, etc. But I suspect I am dreaming...

Why does everyone think you need f/1.4 to do portraits? and Sigma is never putting out a M mount camera. They are a lens manufactuer.

My only issue is that it isn't 1:1... it is 1:3! ??? Weird.

There are several reason for a 1.4 in my mind.
- a 50 in 1.4 is one of the most designed lenses out there and I would hope would be easy to make for the dp series.. The price should remain reasonable.
- 2.8 vs 1.4
--- when I was shooting Kodachrome 25, I would have missed a lot of shots w/o a faster lens..
--- the iso max of around 400/800 for dp Merrill series, this would give u two more stops of low light capability
- the ability to isolate subjects better if needed from their background.
- 50f1.4 may not be as sharp wide open as the 50f2.8, for portraits that could be a good thing

Gary, I understand how a camera works, and the pros and cons of faster lenses.

First, we are not shooting at asa 25. The past is the past.

I doubt Sigma could have made a high quality 1.4 lens that would compete with what they are offering on its other DP cameras with regards to resolution and sharpness. Making slower high quality lenses apparently is easier and cheaper. If they made a f/1.4 50mm APS-C equiv 75mm lens and had to charge $2000... it would fail. ****, this might even fail at $1000.

f/2.8 is not bad. It'll give seperation.

would have been really interesting for me if it had been a 21 or even 24/25 efov version. 28 is probably great for street, but not wide enough for land/skyscape when I want wide.

Has anyone seen any good reviews? It's available at BH, now, and I am strongly considering it (as I tend to prefer 50s, regardless of format).

My first serious camera was a Sigma DP-1, so I have a real soft spot for these cameras. I think the way the DP works is great, it's incredibly basic, no BS, just works. If I still shot digital, I'd be all over this.
