And a quality camera does not eat hay. At least mine do not.
I don't think the country is stable enough or ever will be for manufacturing, so that's really a moot point, is it not?
You raised the question. I answered it. Sorry if I went a bit off topic, but I'm not sure what your point was to begin with.

If a country has the industry infrastructure and the knowhow, it can produce cameras just like those made in Germany. Afghanistan is not such a country.

I seek out Canadian quality
I seek out Canadian quality
My first Leica was an M4-P - Canadian built & still have it. One of the smoothest M-bodies I own - in "spite" of the "all-steel" drive train. Legend is that when the Midland, ON, works were opened they went over the top to ensure there was no "drop" in quality. They succeeded. I now have a couple of M4-P bodies plus several Great White North Summicrons (50's & 90's).
Oh, and the beer and whisky are even better, if you can believe it! Could it be, just maybe, that Canadian football fields are 110 yards long AND they only get three downs (tries) to move the ball ten yards for a first down?
Yes, "first down and a hundred-and-ten" breeds a definite striver mentality. Nice quality, eh?--alfredian (grew up in Upstate New York)

After my interest shifted from digital Leica totally to the M3 Leica and old lenses I really appreciate good old German and Canadian handiwork of the 50s and 60s. And a reliable as-good-as-new service now and then at my local dealer. I really enjoy to not ever again think about anything else than films matching to my needs and equipment.

I love my Canadian 50 summicron and 90 summicron. Superb lenses! (sorry Kostya)
I love my 1994 Toyota pickup truck. Superb reliable vehicle. My wife says it will fall apart around my body someday, but not today
Not sure how well-built current Toyotas are.
But Canada is a truly competent country and society. Not perfect, but fully capable of making Leicas today just as they did in the 50s/60s. I miss my summers in BC. The difficulty crossing the border nowadays is a real dis-incentive. Used to be treated like a welcome human in both countries. Today, I feel a little less welcome crossing into BC, but I feel like a wanted criminal attempting to enter the country where I live (US). Humiliating and aggravating only describe the sensation somewhat. We used to drive back and forth to visit friends and relatives with ease. Then they started wanting valid drivers license to get back into US, now a passport is barely sufficient if you're lucky. Sorry. Off topic. Canada rocks! Bring back the ELCAN brand.

For a german citizen who knows Leica from inside this poll is not very convenient to join.
Sure many people in many countries may produce good things.
But - a small traditional factory that rocks the world´s market (again) like Leica
is drives me to spend more for its products than a "xyeverywhere" could do.
Russians were able to produce lenses and cameras in fully function which can do as good pictures as Leicas can. Canadians are able to produce same quality as Germans. But they´re all profiting from Leicas engineering. Without this their work hadn´t happend and would not. So yes, I would buy a camera from everywhere when it is cheap and functionally. But if I want a Leica I have to buy one and pay for it

Good point, the Midlands were damn good.Did people shun the Leica's made in Midland?
I don't know man.. the whole "mystique" isn't exactly "there" for everyone. There's lots of good alternatives to Leica nowadays. I think Leica has to realize that sooner or later.... and hopefully that would be sooner rather than later lest they go.. *ahem* t*ts up business wise.

I certainly am profiting from Canadian engineering with my collection of Mandler lenses and I will be forever thankful for Canada saving Leica and their rangefinder system when they were thinking of shutting it down. I don't see any difference between my German and Canadian lenses

Hang on. Don't Americans only buy American now? There's no need for any of those awful European and Japanese cameras.
American first! American first!

No, that's not a real thing.

I swear, the title of this thread makes me think of "Green Eggs and Ham..."
Would you buy one in a box? Would you buy one with a fox?
I do not like the Leica cam, I do not like it, Sam I Am.

We crossed the borders recently under flying colors...
I'm not so in dislike of 50mm V4 ELC Cron, but I'm in the struggle to make it sing for me. Collapsible ELC 90/4 was great, but not my focal length at all.
Yesterday I discovered C seal on my M3 DS ELC. It is 60 YO and Canada is 150 YO this year...
Canada is changing, very rapidly, due to ideologies and believes. I have seen it before, in the country which was changed several times by ideologies, believes and small groups interests. Not good... I hear more and more on local radio the word "Marxist". I have seen what they have done before. It scares me...
Current party in power and in government openly disliking traditional local manufacturing, but in the favor and forcing new global warming tax.
