You shot 35mm as a normal lens, wanted to use 21mm a healthy amount, but also enjoy 50mm? Getting two bodies is out of the question, but I plan on using 21mm enough that the external viewfinder will be obnoxious. Is 50mm alright on the R4? Has anyone used it yet?

I've used a 50mm on my R4A and could not get use to it. The 50mm framing on an R4X VF is in my opinion too difficult to get a good feel of what your framing and how it will look in a neg or print. I just bought an A-1 for my 50mm and above needs.

If you have lot's of money, you should think about picking up an R3X as well. That camera was made for a 50mm IMO.

You could consider a two body combo of R2 and Bessa T. The T is the only camera where the external finder didn't bother me - since you can see
the meter when looking through the finder (peripherial vision).

The 50 on the R4 is like a 90 on an R2 or .72 Leica - some like it, some don't.

Best,

Roland.

21/35/50 (or 21/28/50 - the combo I had in Thailand last time) is actually a combination that I use a lot, and I do have an R4 - but I don't really get on with the 50 on it. I'll use it at a push, but for that range of lenses I definitely feel I need two bodies.

a 50 on the r4 is doable, especially if it's the small cv 50/2.5. the framelines are smallish and don't compare well to many other cameras. but if you want one body...the 35 is good and the 21 is great on an r4.
and the r4 is a very good camera, solid and comfortable in the hand.

I thought hard about the R4 but when I had a chance to look through the VF I didn't like the 50 or 35 framelines. Too small. Great camera for someone who shoots a lot of wa in the 21 to 28 range.

It convinced me to get an R3 for the 1:1 VF for 40 and 50. I use an external VF for 21 and it's not really a bother because I use 40 or 50 much more often and enjoy those big 1:1 framelines.

I always have 21/4 permanently mounted on my R4A and 35/2.5 steals most of the time on my R2A. The Jupiter 8 and Nokton 50/1.5 usually stay at home!!!!!

I think about the R4A as a compangion to my R2M and tried the camera in a store. The 50mm frame is usable. If it´s allright - that depends on the personal definition of allright. I wear glasses, so a magnification of 0,52 is comfortable at first sight. But nevertheless the frame for 50mm lenses is small.

If you have the chance to, try it.
