Would you or do you buy 2 of the same lens that you really like?

Yeah, I bought an FSU lens from Fedka, then saw a NEW old stock copy of the same. It was in a box , and papers. Impulse eBay buy.
 
If I hadn't bought a Summarit 24 hours earlier, I would have picked up the wartime CZJ Sonnar 50/1.5 from the classifieds earlier this week, and would have had one on the M3, one on the M6. Loaded with B&W and color that would have made a great team!

Now I'm gonna shoot the Summarit with B&W and the Sonnar with color, son no need to complain at all...😉

I assume we are talking about lenses amassed for photographic purposes as opposed to variations of a particular lens for a collection?
If so, my answer is no.
I only need one copy of a particular focal length per system
(I do have 35, 85 and 105mm lenses in both Nikon F and Nikon S mount versions).
However, I could see where multiple copies of an identical lens would be useful in a non-photographic application. For example, eight or ten identical Leica fast fifty mm lenses with the front elements removed would make a very nice set of drinking glasses, and real conversation pieces.

No, I can't see myself doing that. There might have been logic in it in the days of film.. one on a body loaded with color film, the other on a body with B&W in it. But now, getting B&W from a scanned color negative is only a mouse-click away.
 
Fixbones - What has me curious is why you asked. Have/do you do so? If so, why?

Personally I haven't done so intentionally. As Mr. Hicks said, it sometimes happens when buying another body you get a same lens. Otherwise, I myself would not.

Yes, I have and use doubles of these 6 non-digital camera combinations:

Contax G2 + 45mm Planar f/2.0
Leica M6 + 35mm Summilux (Aspherical + ASPH) f/1.4
Minolta CLE + 40mm (Rokkor + Nokton)
Canon T90 + 85mm FD L f/1.2
Canon T90 + 300mm FD L f/2.8
Voigtländer Bessa II (Lanthar,Heliar,Skopar)

Having and using doubles on shoots (and switching back and forth) is a very good idea and for more reasons than one.
One top advantage for me personally is still being able to shoot off frames while in the middle of changing film in the other camera.
 
Currently own two Mamiya 50/4.0's for a Mamiya 6. Kinda happened as impulse and luck, but I will try to return the version that isn't in "like new" condition.

The Jewish Holiday is postponing the return and technically I'm a few days outa their return policy, but I'm sure that because I am such a good customer in the used department that I won't have a problem.

Mine happened by accident. I own three differant 50's that will M-mount BTW.

oftheherd: The answer to your question is no, I haven't done it yet BUT have been harboring thoughts of doing so ie. getting another copy of 35 Lux.

I am not a collector. I will not hesitate to offload gears that i don't use.
The only focal lengths that i shoot with is 50mm and 35mm (after much experimenting)
And of course i really like the 35 Lux =D.
 
I like the discontinued Nikon 45/2.8 P lens so much I bought two, one black and one silver. I frankly never wanted to be without one I liked it so much.

Do I really need two, absolutely not.
 
I met a Leica enthusiast who said he bought three of everything. Me, I bought a collapsible Summicron in LTM mount, already having one in bayonet mount. Apart from that, I'm strictly a one-of-each guy. So many lenses, so little time, you know.
 
I have two 35's only because I dropped one and needed the focal length while the other was being repaired. I'm now considering selling both to buy the new 35 asph.

You only need one lens of each focal legnth. If you find one you really like then a spare is only for the people where money is no object.
 
Lenses are pretty durable. So, no... UNLESS you happen upon a "true steal" (see one for $0.50 at a flea market), or your sample has flaws (dinged barrel that makes filters hard to go on/off, scratches, etc.) and you want a better one, or the sample you have isn't the greatest due to factory variances - a "Monday" lens, or you know a certain make/model upgraded coatings (or something) after a certain serial number, or you want that lens of two different bodies, etc. - lots of "logical" reasons for dupes but not just "to have" on account of you like it, which I infer is your meaning.

i've been thinking about getting a second cv 15 so i could have 2 completely separate kits running at the same time and no need to check which lenses are in which bag.

as of now i have 2, 28s and 2, 50s but from different makers and times.
 
Not a duplicate in f/stop... Focal length...yes. I do plan on buying another 50mm with f/2 as the widest opening... something when I don't need f/1.1 (it is a larger lens). just to be more compact you know.
