Would you or do you buy 2 of the same lens that you really like?

I probably have 15 or 20 50 mm lenses. A DR and Rigid are as close to twins as I have.

Oh, forgot , I have two 50 Summitars, one purchased and mint one that came with a mintish 111C as a bundle. Both are two nice to sell, both had filters on them and glass is perfect. Even the collapse tubes shows neglible ware. I never see them in this nice a condition.

Since I like it on a screw body, I am keeping them.
 
I have trouble adjusting to the idea of having two lenses of the same focal length. So I cannot imagine a world where I'd want two of the exact same lenses. It really just makes no sense to me.
But then, I have multiple hobbies competing for the attention of my bank account.

Having and using doubles on shoots (and switching back and forth) is a very good idea and for more reasons than one.
One top advantage for me personally is still being able to shoot off frames while in the middle of changing film in the other camera.

Makes sense to me. You've got great equipment AND have a freedom few shooters have.

Before the Summaron 35/2.8, I was infatuated by the 'cron 35 v3, and bought a second copy for backup. That one has appreciated in value (like most Leitz lenses of that era), so I don't feel too embarrassed. 🙂 Plus, it's collector grade. More defensible are cameras which can break down and require significant time away, or require a parts doner: mine are the Contax RTS III (x3) and the Contax T (x3).

Up until this weekend passed I had 2 v.5 summicron 50's. One Canadian and the other German. Identical pics so sold the Canadian version. I have 3 50mm f2 Nikkors. Different vintage for different bodies and at the moment 3 35's for Leica, v.4, a pre asph 'lux and a CV ultron. All have different qualities so for now i'm keeping them. To have 2 of the same lens to me makes no sense.
 
I have several identical camera bodies, but no identical camera lenses. Duplicate focal lengths, especially 50mm, but different max f-stops and mounts.

Duplicate cameras are: M2, IIf, F3, OM1, Nikonos 5, Rollei 35, Fuji GS670II. I recently sold off one of my 2 Rolleiflexes and Hexar AF's, otherwise they would be duplicates too.
 
The same lens, one black and one silver? 😀

Actually I'm a bit tempted by the nickel-finish 50/2 Heliar, while already having a collapsible black one... but those are not really the same except for the glass.

Otherwise, I have bought a second similar lens, a later version where there's been optical improvements. And as Roger mentioned, by accident when buying a body with a lens I already had. I will usually keep the duplicate to package with a body upon sale.
 
I have about 10 Nikkor 5cm F1.4's in S-Mount. Some came with the bodies. Some were in Ebay auctions, like low-ball bid of $80. Some were cheap and needed repair. Cheaper than Body caps, and take a better picture.
 
I have three Konica Hexanon-M 50/2s. I work with them in and around water often enough that I always carry two with me. One will get damp or drowned sometime.

For quite a while I had a 35/1.4 Aspherical and a 35/1.4 ASPH until a collector offered me so much for the Aspherical that I couldn't keep it in good conscience.

Things don't have to make sense. People think differently. There is no one way to do anything.

I can sit back and pooh the idea of having a lot of lenses that are the same focal length, f/stop, and maybe even the same brand.

But nobody mentioned camera bodies. Shssss! I am a bit of a collector in that respect. But I have been thinking about getting rid of some.

See, I feel better already. 😛
