Nup. trading down to a M8 from my M9 would be like trading a Rolls Royce for a Buick LeSabre, or something...

I had an M8 and the IR problem and crop factor were annoying
One thing I understand and the other one I don't.
What I do understand is the crop factor (which is not a "crop factor issue"); it's annoying.
What I don't understand is calling a well-expected, well-documented, IR sensitivity spec: calling this an "issue" is like saying that Tri-X has a color-recording issue.
Just sayin'

I get your point, but perhaps many feel its an issue because Leica wasn't upfront about it upon its release? Also, which other camera needs these filters to perform as it should?

What's this thread all about? In my world where glass and skill is far more important than the camera, and where a TON of film can be had for the price of either and M8 and more so an M9, who cares?
I'm a 99%er, and I'll match ANY of you 1%ers with a judged shoot off, ANY time. I'll lay you down like David did Goliath with your damned M9. Pick your street. Bring it on!

I have both. I would never go back. I thought of selling my M8, but glad I kept it when my M9 went in for sensor replacement. The M8 is still an extremely fine camera!

Benefit right... but not required in order to get true blacks instead of purple.

No, but I will trade my M8 for an M10 (when it comes out)

So jaapv, a question.
If I use the same lens on the M8, with IR/UV, then slip it onto the M6 with film, is there an issue?
Loaded question as that is what I am about to do.
Gary
I do this all the time. For longer focal lengths ~>35mm there is generally no issue. For shorter focal lengths there can be the cyan cast at the edges (the M8 corrects for this with coded lenses), but since I tend to shoot B&W even the cyan cast isn't really an issue.

It depends on the lens,. with a short lens under35 mm you will get color vignetting, and on the film. with slide film you might get a green color cast. Otherwise no problem.

No, but only very few have better than 80% IR suppression, so balancing synthetic blacks away from the magenta cast will produce a green cast in the rest of the image. Mostly not too bad but on certain images it will be annoying. And foliage will be a bit olive in landscape shots. The problem gets more pronounced when using a polfilter. In extreme high-IR situations like non in the tropics I will always use an IR filter. People tend to forget that these filters existed well before the introduction of the M8 and were called “ digital” filters.

I pondered a similar thought recently and was going to exit M9 for XP1. My warranty will run out this year as well and I am going to buy an extended warranty instead. M9 was my dream camera before I got it and still remains the same now I have had it for 18mths or so. So no I wouldn't go back to M8.

M9 *will be* nice camera after its price, second hand, have dropped to (subjective POV) reasonable levels. its not nice *now*
kinda disagree OP at one point, why M8 should be at bottom of its value curve ?

Been thinking that the M9 isn't my main camera anymore, but feel I can't sell it outright without owning a digital M. I'm seriously thinking that it might be time to sell the M9, buy a M8 for when I need that rangefinder itch scratched. Or perhaps I should go with a film M.
