Wow, big flickr change...

50 seems high when you consider it is double what i paid for the pro version...a doubling of price in one fell swoop is a bit much for many i predict.

I'm wandering if the $50 is for new users since my renewal came in my email today with the renewal price of $24.95

Order Summary
Service Term Amount
1 year Flickr Pro Annual Subscription $24.95
Amount to be charged on 06/10/2013: $24.95

It may go up next billing cycle (2014) but by then I suspect there will be more options added to enhance the site..

"Starting on 5/20/2013, we will no longer be offering new Flickr Pro subscriptions."

I think the pictures look better, basically surrounded by other pictures and not the ridiculous bright white flickr background. That said, the layout is somewhat confusing and looks disorganized between contacts photos and activity. Everything that was there before seems to still be there, maybe harder to find, maybe just takes getting used to. It's the first fickr change since I joined that is arguably an improvement. Their development team seemed to only be making it worse over the last 5 years, till now.

I like it, personally. I like Picasa, too, for its ability to scroll forever: if I'm looking for a particular photo of mine, out of the couple thousand, I like to be able to just scroll a single page, rather than keep clicking links to new pages. So I like that change.

The wodging them all together, it doesn't bug me. It's the fashion now. But I noticed in my cover photo header some links: below my name on the left are "Photostream, Sets, Favorites, Edit" When I click Edit, I get the old layout, with lots of white space and smaller images (although still with the new header). I'm a Pro user, so I don't know if all accounts have this. But if you hate your new stream layout, see if you have that link.

When I clicked Edit and got the old layout, the old, "Did you know you can change the layout of this page?" link is there at the bottom, but clicking that link got me a 404. So this view may be going away, or it may just be in a sad state of semi-transition, who knows.

I'm mostly annoyed that it's not true infinite scrolling. Previously, I had ~140 pages of photos, now I have 25. So there's a lot more on each page, but really, when I'm on the computer, I'm nothing if not very lazy. Just let me keep flicking the touchpad and scroll scroll scroll...

I liked clean look and central page. Now I basically have to reconsider all my online picture thing - which is a good thing, of course. But no way I'm going to pay $50 for new layout, no. And if ads will be smarter than adblock then I'll have more free time, which again is a good thing. So I'm winner in any case.

I do not need that free TB as I don't use flickr to backup my work, only to show. Probably I'll find other alternative for this. I'm pretty sure I will not break their business if I quit so no problem also for flickr. Seems like win-win.

New scheme of accounts has potential if they are smart. I like ability to upload more than 3(?) pictures a day (if I have got related series to upload), replace and stats of pro account. If flickr starts subscriptions offering subsets or all this bundled, it can be a good thing. I could even pay to not use new layout. $25 per year for all of this. Like it were until today.

Old slideshow is still there (for now)

Old slideshow is still there (for now)

the slideshow is pretty horrible...it's like watching on a rolling boat!

I'm undecided about the new slideshow, but you can still get the old one if you want to...total kludge, but it's there. Probably other ways to get to it, but this worked for me:

If you're looking at a set and see something like this in the address bar...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/kmcclain/sets/72157633037437759/

...just add this to the end of the URL: show/

Final URL looks like this, and brings up the old slideshow...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/kmcclain/sets/72157633037437759/show/

Your mileage may vary... 🙂

Not happy about the new interface.

I did discover that if you hit the EDIT button, you can get your own stream to display in the old manner. But, I have yet to discover how to do the same when looking at a group or someone else's stream.

I wouldn't mind all of these changes IF I had the choice of readily manually switching between the old and new interfaces. Maybe there is some functionality we haven't discovered yet or maybe the engineers will install some selectivity.

Who needs a terabyte of space, online?

Probably flickr is going to change also ownership terms. Lots of free space to attract picture uploaders and chance to sell them. Hmmmm.

I think the speed issues are the Flickr servers, not the website itself. It was very snappy right after it went live, and then slowed down to a crawl in the next hour. Hopefully they'll smooth that out soon.

For anyone who wants a pro refund, they're offering one that's pro-rated for however long you have left on your subscription. I don't get the people complaining about the "loss" of pro features - they're all still on the site, you just get them for free. If you don't think no ads is worth $50 (or $25 for current members?), don't buy it.

I totally understand people who want more layout control. I'm surprised that the "endless sheet" display is the only option (though it's the one I want) and I hope they add more. I've seen some people mentioning that they switched back to the old format, but I haven't seen any howto's. Hopefully that will be a real option.

I'm most worried that Flickr will become a more fragmented community because of the abundant and cheap space available per account. People on tech websites have already realized they can use Flickr as a psudo-dropbox (techies did the same thing with GMail back when they announced the unheard-of 1 gigabyte of free storage). I hope they institute policies the encourage people to carefully considered work rather than using it as a photo dump.

flickr is slightly better the before, but they keep on hiding the actual size of photo.
i still like tumblr's interface better, but they are both under yahoo now.
