I recently found one on KEH for $1150. Classified as "Ex+," i think, but the thing looks unused and mint....

There was one at B&H for $1400.00, 9+ condition, last week. This week it is gone.
The problem I see is the GAS attack on new AF glass, especially long expensive teles. I already own a F3 nonHP, F3 HP, F3P, F2AS plus my Leica gear. I would still keep all my MF glass, because for speed (F-Stop) it has an edge over the new AF lenses.
The new AF long teles would kill me and then bury me financially, but I know I will love them, because of their focusing speed. A 400/2.8 on a F5 was amazing at a photo expo years ago. It seemed to focus faster than humanly possible.

Nikon's pro cameras were always so solid. I have an F3HP, an F4 and an F5 and they are just so overdesigned. I love 'em. I just had the F4's shutter serviced for the first time since I bought it new in 1991. Freakin' solid machines. I'd get an F6 if I could just find a couple of grand lying around . . . now where did I leave that wad of cash?

Edit: come to think of it, I have an F Photomic and 2 Nikkormats too. Could you tell I am a fan?

Yeah, slr's ... who needs 'em?Nah...I have a donated Olympus OM-2n for those odd "slips" of resolve, which I basically use as an ersatz view camera anyway (Sigma 21-35 zoom almost permanently mounted on it). But really, I've had one hell of a 25-some-odd-year dalliance with all sorts of SLR gear, from most of the majors, and the things are truly "out of my system." To badly paraphrase Ian Tyson, if the SLR was my mistress, my true love is RF.

Worth the difference from e.g. F100?
Worth the difference from e.g. F100?
As much as I can see some wanting a tank, the F100 (for example) seems a pretty excellent deal used. I just picked one up in excellent shape for about $200 - pretty solid build.
What features could possibly justify a ten-fold difference? Okay, give some leeway for new vs used, etc, I still have trouble imagining those for whom this would be critical. As compared to spending the money on glass.
In advance, I apologize to serious professionals who shoot 10,000 rolls a year of which 40% in Antarctica at -75 degrees, use only the super-newest flash systems, need milliseconds better focussing, etc. But for anyone on a budget of any kind?

I agree, the F100 is an outstanding deal used. $200 gets one a lot of camera. Luckily, I managed to find a mint used F6 for $900 which is IMO a great price for the best film camera from Nikon ever. Hard to believe these are now selling used for what a used M6 costs.

Supply > demand
Supply > demand
Yes, excellent deals on used Nikon bodies abound. So many were made, so little demand now.
Doesn't it sometimes seem like they made more bodies than lenses? Or I guess I'm just looking for something apart from the basic kit zooms.

Recently had to buy a third F3 because it was so cheap, even though I had two already. Kinda got the MD-4 motor drive for free.
Seems like the fast primes (MF) in excelent condition don't linger though. I'm at a point where I don't have to change lenses and can just grab the camera with the focal length I want. How spoiled is that?

You're right. The F100 is a vastly better 'deal.' I had one two+ years ago. Then, i re-bought one last month, thinking i couldn't get an F6 at a decent price. When i found the F6, though, i returned the F100.
But, there isn't a ten-fold difference in features. Not even five-fold.... What i prefer in the F6 is the viewfinder, which is a bit better than in the F100, and it gets me closer to the FE2 ideal. Not quite, but closer. The F6 also sounds amazing. But, that's not a super significant issue. It's just a nicety. The F100 sounds great, but next to the F6, it sounds just a bit more primitive. Just don't compare the two and you'll remain happy with the F100. I sorta wish B&H DIDN'T have that F6 demo sitting on the shelf, and i coulda kept the $800 difference.
As for "spending the difference on glass," it's kind of a non-issue. I don't really need/want a lot of lenses. I have a 50mm Series E and a 50/1.2 AIS. I'll probably add a 35/2 AF-D, and that'll be it. I've got everything else covered with an EOS system and other cameras.
It is kinda funny to read the opinion that the F6 is "so extravagant/expensive," when compared to any Leica-M....

Thanks for GAS avoidance advice
Thanks for GAS avoidance advice
Thanks for the advice - I'll try to avoid handling an F6 and maybe be able to save my money. And I don't own any Leica's - for the moment, I'm going to fiddle more with medium format and see how that grabs me before dumping a bundle on more gear.
