Wrist Strap Recommendations

I did some searching in the forum for this but I didn't find anything. What are you using? I have a Canonet QL17 G-III and the current nylon wrist strap is not only ugly but also not very handy. Suggestions from other users? I'd take neck strap suggestions as well. I do seem to remember seeing an interesting strap that used the right side strap mount and the tripod socket. I think it was on an SLR with a big hand grip so I'm not sure how well it would work ona camera like mine. Thanks!

(EDIT: Of course I ran across some old posts on this subject AFTER I post! The Sling http://www.leicagoodies.com/ was suggested in an older post. Does anyone have experience with it on a Canonet or even know if it will work on one?)

I have a GIII and I made a wrist strap out of the neck strap. I just cut it off and held it with one of the clips. I hope you can see it from this photo. It's not elegant, but it works for me. My biggest concern has been the metal tab on the camera somehow pulling out, but that does seem very secure.

I very much prefer a wrist strap to a next strap, but I'll often carry a camera without one at all.

I just ordered one of Gordy's wrist straps a few days ago. He is a member here, and they come highly recommended by many members. He even donates a portion of the sale back to the forums.

The photo was clear, thanks. I have somewhat large hands and long fingers and I find the camera is unsecure and uncomfortable to carry without a strap.

Thanks for the good words! I've kind of been buried lately between work and home. You know, the reality thing. I finally have a tripod mount wrist strap that I should have up on my site in a day or two. Unless reality intervenes again! Stay tuned.

I was actually thinking about that this weekend. I've got a beautiful Zeiss Contessa LKE that is waiting for one. I'll check back in a few days & place my order. If you need product shots for your site w/ the Contessa, let me know.

I recently got an Artist & Artisan wrist strap from Rich Pinto for my M7, and very nice it is too. That said, it cost a lot more than Gordy's one, which I was unaware of at the time. I may at some time get one of those too, for comparison purposes - it can go on the other camera. 🙂

As an aside; with the A&A strap, and I presume with Gordy's too, its a doddle to carry the camera with your thumb resting on the top plate and fingers on the bottom. With a Tom "softie" installed it means taking a sly shot from the hip is simple.

I haven't tried the "sling", but the design of it doesn't look suited to doing the above.

I can't imagine carrying a fine camera without a real NECK strap (or changing film without one)...

I use old skinny nylon neckstraps for five 35mm cameras (FD1s, Ps, IIIC)..
...these quarter-inch-wide fabric straps bunch up nicely, making them into wrist straps when I want...

...I did have a leather strap from Leica, but it FAILED (of course it was 60 years old).

i use wrist straps exclusively.
my neck is wrecked and any prssure at all applied to my neck results in a headache.
plus i prefer the speed in using a wrist strap instead of a clumsy neck strap. (mho)

i have an expensive custom one from photoequip that i love. they no longer make it, too bad.
hakuba make a very nice one for dirt cheap, like 6 bucks or so.
i also make them from old neck straps or plain webbing. a little stitch or 2 and they are bullet proof.

my one mishap with a wrist strap was my fault and it could have happened with a neck strap also.

I love the black/red wrist strap I got from Gordon. It adds to the elegance of my Canon 7s.

For the Rapid Omega, though, I ended up buying a Cartom neoprene/nylon strap, figuring that it would help with the weight. It's horrible. Or at least, I can't use it while it's attached to my neck becuase the strap is thick and always manages to come up on the sides and get in the way. I didn't try using it on my shoulder, or removing it from my neck when I shoot. I just got fed up and took it off. Now the RO goes in and out of a bag as needed, or I just walk around with my hand on the grip. Builds muscle and character, I suppose.

I use green inch-wide nylon webbing (climbing webbing from REI) with sewn-in buckle/clips on a Century Graphic (used more hand-held than tripod)...fed through the convenient flash bracket slots...these straps are plenty wide for comfort with the weight (admittedly a 6X9 Century is far lighter than most MF cameras, even with roll back)

Damaged cameras are almost always the "photographer's fault" ... MUCH better safety with neckstraps than wrist straps, plus skinny (3/8") webbing neckstraps double nicely as wrist straps. Think about the risk of dropping during rapid film changing and easier reloading with the camera safely neckstrapped...especially with bottom feeders.

I'd bet most Canon shutter wrinkles happen in film changing... 🙄
