Scanner: Epson V500 with Epson Scan, latest version on MacOSX 10.9.2. Preview produces thumbnails from which I can do whatever the software allows me to do. However, with latest version of Vuescan and latest version of SilverFast AI, each in "trial mode", I get the most beautiful scans of the film holder!!!! No thumbnails to be seen anywhere. :bang::bang:

I'm new to scanning, so I'm sure there's something stupid I'm doing on those two software packages. I'd really like to try them out, but so far I've not had any luck getting scans of pics I can work with. Any and all help I'd be grateful for. 🙂

with silver fast software you will have to make a mask for each frame in the holder.
your Epson scanner with the supplied film holders have a little holes at the top that the holder that it reads so that it knows which holder is in the scanner.

The Epson software will automatically frame each negative without scanning the film holder.

any other software that you use with the supplied holders from Epson will not automatically find each negative you'll have to mark them out yourself

In Vuescan it's much the same.

On the Crop tab, set the Crop Size to the size of film you're scanning.
Set the Multi-crop to the same.
Do a preview scan.

You should see a bunch of dotted lines outlining the frames of the film.
Hover over a frame with your mouse and a number should appear, that's the frame number in the software. If you click onto the Scan tab as opposed to the Preview tab it will let you see just that frame and you can use the arrow buttons at the bottom to scroll to different frames or use the Frame Number slider on the Input tab to move to different frames.
