X-Pro1: stay or go?

Currency is not the only measure of value. There are opportunity costs to be factored in as well. If you pay more for a camera at intro, but love it and take pictures with it or more pictures with it than you would with some other camera (weight factors, etc) then those pictures have a value apart from currency. This all plays into whether a camera has actually depreciated or held its own in my estimation, which may not be much, but there it is.

Well said.. I think people are just too hung up on digital rot (depreciation).

As jsrocket said, these companies have stock holders, they need to make a profit, that means attracting new and old customers w/ new features and functionality or the other company will take them away.

I gave up my X-Pro and lenses to make a wholesale switch to Nikon. I figured that would serve my microstock purposes better and I was right. But . . . man does not live by microstock alone.

Although I'm really happy with the D610, I really missed my old friend. Therefor I'm getting a new X-Pro1 + 35/1.4 to add to the Nikon stuff.

I agree... I can't get rid of my X-Pro1 even though I use other cameras these days. It's slow, but it feels right and that 35mm is very nice.

My X-Pro has managed to escape Xecution by pairing up with the 27mm lens. It's fun, it's fast, and we'll see what comes up at Photokina. Plus my kids are getting older and slowing down. I mean, yesterday, I took my Hexar AF out of retirement and even managed to catch them in a few shots.

I forgot how much I loved the Hexar - I found a roll of 2012 BW400CN and shot it, just for old time's sake. Nothing like spending a year getting the shutter release fixed and retiring the camera shortly thereafter...

After about a week with my new X-Pro1 + 35/1.4 I wonder why I ever sold the first one. I had intended to just purchase a Thumbs Up grip and a soft release and stick with one camera/one lens, but . . .

I have fond memories (and images) of the 14/2.8 so maybe that's next. Switching to the EVF is useful for me sometimes, but I would not buy any of the long zooms for my X-Pro because the EVF is not really workable for me in bright sunlight. I read that the X-T1 has a much better EVF. Has anyone found that to be true?

The XT-1's EVF is significantly better.

The EVF screen itself is newer technology : 2.36M dot OLED screen; 0.77x (equiv.) magnification while the X-Pro 1 EVF has a 1.44 dot LCD

The XT-1 CPU is much faster so the EVF is much more flexible. I prefer the split-screen mode when focusing might be tricky. There is a small screen with a magnified view that can be set for color or white focus peaking, or a pseudo-split focus screen. There are several other unique EVF features and operation modes made possible by the newer technology as well.

The EVF is larger than many APS-C DSLR OVFs and m4/3 bodies. I have noticed two issues besides the unavoidable electronic EVF lag (which only affects action photography). The first is the display flickers when old-style fluorescent lights dominate the scene. Second, if you use ISO 1600 or higher and you under expose, the display has a lot of color noise. For me this is hardly ever an issue. There is an optional extended eye cup that makes the EVF cope well with bright sunlight.

The built-in diopter covers -4 to +2 corrections as continuous adjustments.

Willie_901 - is the split screen relatively fast to focus with the X-T1? I have been testing the various focus methods with the X-Pro1, and the fastest and most accurate serums to be just eyeballing it at normal magnification.

All true, I'm sure. But I just can't get past that mini-DSLR form factor. Funny how one feature can sway one so much. Even one that doesn't make a whole lot of difference.

You are not alone! If my XP1 ever needs replaced and the XP2 is not yet available, I will go to the X100T and the adapters.

My one big issue with the XP1 is the OVF. It is really nice to contemplate having an OVF for the more extreme lenses and zooms — really making the XP1 an all-purpose camera. My experience is that it is almost unusable in bright sunshine. The view is so relatively dim I can't compose in the OVF.

Maybe there is a fix for this but I don't know of one. Are the other X models better in that respect?

I had looked at trading in my X100s and the X-Pro1 to replace both with the X-T1. The quotes I got back were a bit of a shocker and that put paid to buying the X-T1: around £200-230 for the X-Pro1 and only £550 for a very new X100s. So, it wouldn't be worth much to sell the X-Pro1 but, you could just continue using the camera if there's nothing wrong with it. If your really not interested in using it any longer, why don't you pass it on to someone who can't afford a camera because of the price of modern day cameras (I still can't see where all manufacturers get the prices they do... Where's the £1,500 worth of materials etc?) such as a family member, relative or even a camera club? Yes, I learned the hard way too after buying a Leica M9 and selling just when Leica dropped the price of its replacement.

As you can see from my previous comments, I had thought about getting the X-T 1 as a replacement for the X-Pro 1 but the trade in was the downfall of that idea. I'm now looking at keeping my X-100s as my one and only camera as I now find I always pick it over the X-Pro 1 when I head out to do my photography. I've asked my supplier what I'd get for my X-Pro 1, and the three prime lenses (18, 35 & 60 mm) and if it is a good enough deal, I'm intending to buy the new hand grip, WCL-100, TXL-100 and a spare battery. I have used the 60 little. I still intend to buy the X-T1 eventually but that will depend on me getting a job.

I agree about the for factor. I prefer to use the X-Pro 1 for candid work even though I find it easier to work quickly with the XT-1.

In my view the design was driven by the need to comet with cameras, both mirrorless an DSLRs, where the finder is centered.

Lucky white heather anyone? My idea just got dashed today as Fujifilm and Calumet have started an offer where you can get two free lenses with a purchase of an X-Pro1. That hit my chances of getting a good deal for my kit so I'm holding onto my X-Pro1 and lenses for now. A dream shattered... Whimper
