My experience with the G1 & 20/1.7 was a disappointment. I really dislike the small sensor. The DOF doubles which is frustrating for me. The G1 RAW file IQ is not as good as my D200's. it was worse than the D200 at ISO 800 which is pretty bad.I really didn't like how it operated either. I never used the swivel screen. I particularly didn't like the EVF-shutter lag which compromised the camera for any sort of action photography. I had a photo from the G1 accepted at a juried art show and I did like the print quality from base ISO images. The 20/1.7 is a nice lens. So is the G1 kit lens, but it's really slow at longer focal lengths. The kit lens IS feature wasn't useful to me.
The reviews indicate the 35/2 AF-D is a competent lens. I much rather have that on my D700 than a zoom.
I don't see that there's a X100 alternative. The X1 requires an external finder (even more money) or holding the camera out at arm's length... yuck.
You might be able to pick up a nice used D90 and a nice used 24/2.8 AF-D lens. This would be smaller than your D700 and the 24/2.8 AF-D is well rated.
I'm just patiently waiting for my X100 pre-order to be filled.
