X100 and Photoshop CS4?

I downloaded some RAW files and as I expected, CS4 would not open them as there is no support. I plan on getting the X100 and want to know if I will be able to download something for CS4 so I can open the X100 files.

Adobe provides a free download to convert various RAW formats into DNGs (which will open in CS4). It is quite likely that whenever Adobe Camera RAW is updated to support the x100 then this utility will also support it. No guarantees, though.

I understand the thought: I was unhappy enough with the upgrade to CS4 (and the long wait for fixes) that I'm gun-shy of further upgrades - without even considering the cost.

It's just a matter of time before Adobe supports the X100 RAW files.

If you have a Mac, there is a free/donation-ware RAW converter available right now. Perhaps a Windows solution is already available as well –*I wouldn't know anything about that.

When my X100 arrives I plan to shoot in RAW + jpeg. I will convert the best RAW images to 16 bit tiffs using Raw Photo Processor. Next I will import the tiff into Lightroom 3 and convert it to a DNG file upon import. For casual use (Flickr, etc) I'll probably just tweek the jpegs in Lightroom.

Once Adobe Camera Raw supports the X100 RAW files, I will shoot everything as RAW only and resume my normal Lightroom work flow. I will also re-process the early X100 RAW versions of photos I plan to print or use on my web site with Lightroom.

You will need CS5 to open the X100 raw files. I recently purchased a Sony NEX 5, and Adobe's last upgrade to ACR included this camera...but only if you upgraded to CS5.

Short answer - yes, you can 🙂

There seems to be some confusion between ACR and Adobe DNG converter. I just used the latest version of DNG converter (6.3) to convert Sony NEX raw files and opened them just fine on CS3. ACR, however, is a plugin, and the latest version will not work with older versions of PS. I would recommend downloading the free DNG converter and using CS4 rather than upgrading PS. I know it's an extra step in the workflow but for the price difference and the ability to try different converters using the DNG files that's gotta be the way to go.

I don't believe Aperture software supports RAW X100 files yet either. New version of RAW Developer 1.9.1 for Mac does however

You are of course correct - I should have said "there will be a way at some point, without coughing up the $$$ for CS5" - and then described the necessary workflow.

Use the DNG option and CS4.

Save the original raw so you are not locked into Adobe.

CS5 is pretty darn nice. Consider the upgrade.

The DNG format is open source, so you will not be locking yourself into Adobe by using it. See here

That's really the idea: a non-proprietary image file format that will survive the vagaries of the camera market, in times like those we live in
