X100 Sample black and whiite conversion

I am considering this camera for color shots (we are down to pretty much one place in greater Detroit area that still develops slides and color negs) but convert to b/w... Why, if you can have the real thing and develop it yourself at home dirt cheap?

Thats fair, but Fuji could have added some of its bw film plug-ins as it did with color ones.

You can adjust contrast/sharpness and grain in camera for b/w JPEG output. What more do you want? Make some film actions in photoshop or lightroom and apply them to raw files. Million times better quality, and infinitely adjustable.

Some people actually find digital a superior medium than film for black and white in a lot of cases! (gasp)

Regardless of wether you think digital black and white is somehow 'fake' or not, the best way to make a good digital b/w is to massage a file which contains the full potential of data so as to keep the output quality high - just like a film negative. JPEGs don't dodge/burn anywhere near as well as a RAW file.

Or these days, its all about "what people think" rather than experience, logic, or even scientific data?


I also happen to "think" that the sun raises from the west, but I find it hard to make people accept that theory.

Question of time. At the moment everybody is relying on pictures on Flickr and blogs posted by about three people.

Wait for it to hit the market, and you'll see the stream of B&W cats and bookshelves rolling in.

Fine with me if people shoot their cats and bookshelves in RAW...

The phrase sounded odd to me, that's all 🙂 I guess it's a sign of times, there is a whole generation of people now who beleives that camera has to have an LCD screen on a back. And I am totally OK with it (what choice do I have anyway) but it just sounded funny to me, that's all.
As a side note, try some TriX-400. Film is still cheap, and chemicals are even cheaper. You may like the results a lot, never know.

I happen to know both worlds, and I have developed some 60 films over the course of last year. I still think the discussion about the X100 is rational, as it is indeed an alternative to many film-based cameras.

Why all this bitterness? We're having a serious discussion with rational arguments. There could actually be something new for you to learn in here. Or ist that precisely the problem?

I've developed more B&W film than I care to remember (have a BFA in photography from before digital was the norm)... and I love the results. I'm not going to say I like digital B&W better, but these days I just prefer the digital workflow and digital B&W is good enough for me. I can do it all in the comfort of my tiny Manhattan apartment at any hour of any day. That said, I do love the addition of the LCD to cameras.

Let me give you an example. I'm in a dark interior. I want a B&W shot. It's dark enough that I am forced to use Kodak 3200 or Ilford 3200. I process the image. I look at it an decide that I would have preferred the look of Tri-X, but it was too dark to use.

From the digital file equivalent, I could expose at 3200, go into Silver Efex 2, process the image using the Tri-X setting, and voila, I now have what I wanted.

Nice having a choice as opposed to being forced to use what I didn't want.

It has nothing to do with how many people I know, and everything to do about using what i want to realize my vision.

Don't know if it is a must buy but certainly looks exciting. I wonder how many people on this site put it down because it does not have a red dot on it. Do they feel threatened by a camera that cost 1/6th as much as an M9 and certainly seems to handle high ISO better. And how many of those same people swear by the 35 Summicron or Summilux?

I don't think Leica owners feel "threatened" by the X100. First, we have not seen enough X100 samples to determine if it is better than m9/35 sumicron/lux combo. Second, if one could already afford an M9 plus Leica lens, they should have no problems financially to purchase an X100 just to test it out. It also seems to me that people who do not or cannot afford Leica M9 are looking for a "savior" camera to fill their inadequacies. Soon we'll know.
