X100 sees B&W and color at same time!

Set image quality to "F+ RAW", and film simulation to "B". Now you can fire away, and capture two images with each shutter actuation, one in fine black and white, and one RAW, which you can process any way you like. With this setting, the neatest part is being able to see the image in either black and white or color just by toggling the viewfinder between OVF and EVF. This is a wonderful way to visualize immediately how the image looks in monochrome vs. color depiction. The M9 can do these image captures, too, for only ten times the money, but it can't show the black and white in the viewfinder, and neither can any DSLR.

Ijak, in what what does it not seem to work? What files do you get? You should end up with a normal RAW file and a b&w jpeg. In the camera, you'll only see the jpeg.

I've been shooting this way for a month or two now and I love it. One thing that I at first didn't think I'd use, but that I've come to really like, is the 1,5 second preview in the finder after taking a picture. Using the optical finder and then seeing the actual picture in b&w for a second is not just pretty cool (feels like the effect sometimes used in movies!), it also lets me quickly judge whether I "got it" (with regards to composition and exposure), so I never have to chimp.

I don't see the big deal honestly... if you use raw, you can create anything you want of the file in PP. I'm not so sure seeing it in B&W when chimping is going to hurt or help. Also, viewing the image in your VF after the fact is still chimping. That said, I don't think chimping is a bad thing... Anyway, to each his own.

I have only had this camera for a few weeks and I am still getting to grips with it. The penny has now dropped and I understand and like this feature, above all I love this camera. I have just shot some pics on my local patch ( which I have seen for years ). The IQ and the autumn colour rendition is amazing and have opened my eyes.🙂 Ijak

yes it is a cool feature, and yess, most other dslr's allow you to shoot raw+ jpeg where raw is color and jpeg whatever you want (b&w, sepia etc). difference is other dslrs only show jpeg setting in the vf, where x100 shows both at the flick of a switch. thats what makes this feature special on x100.
