Hi:
I am a x100 user, my only digital. It works for me though having compared it on paper to the x100T I THINK?? it would be a worth while upgrade on increased MP's of 16 vs 12, better and more accurate AF, most definitely better manual focusing (though I hear its still not where it should be) and the hybrid OVF is an improvement. Your overall thoughts? My one concern is that I do like the sensor in the original and Ive heard mixed opinions on the newer sensor in the x100T….B&H is selling the x100T for $1099. WOnder why? I do hear rumors of x200 in summer of 2016…. As always, thanx in advance. Daniel.
I have had the X100 since launch and recently replaced it with X100t. I will try to simplify for experience here and try not to write a book but let me know if there is specific question that you have.
1. 16mp and 12mp didnt really make much difference for me. However the fall foilage color running together is real and printed out makes X100 actually looks like it has higher resolution. There are other software you can use that's much better than LR but I am cheap and I am just waiting for LR to really fix their engine. However, for the most part, it didnt really play a role.
2. Like many I do like the color and BW on the X100 but probably because I am used to it. X100t is just different, not bad. select the correct profile in LR, you can see the watercolor effect gets better and there are room to improve. I think if you use Capture One or Iridien developer, it is pretty much not a problem. I do like the Classic Chrome color profile and specifically took some shots with that look.
3. Execution, AF is much faster and more accurate. After firmware 2.0 on the x100, I liked the camera much better but after using the x100t, there is no comparison. T just respond much better than the x100.
4. The OVF/EVF switch is faster too. I never used the EVF much and can't really comment on if it is better or worse. However, OVF is a little darker I feel on the X100t but the frameline move real time as you turn the focus ring is a much better touch. The focus ring is light year ahead but still very difficult to use. The little focusing screen is nice but hard to use to be honest. I have hard time seeing the split focusing aid and my brain has a hard time focus and re-compose when the focusing screen is showing image not where the image suppose to be. I am spoiled by mechanical real rangefinders. I thought the little screen will finally be the answer of digital rangefinder... not quite. But overall the OVF is an improvement.
5. Lens is exactly the same, same flare and slightly softer at F2 that you should already be familiar with. The Aperture ring is now 1/3 stop which I am not a huge fan of. I thought the 1/2 stop would have been sufficient.
6. Higher ISO is cleaner than the X100.
At the end of the day, I got a decent price selling my X100 and decided to upgrade. Maybe this is just me being nostalgic but from the box my x100 came with to the actual feel of the camera, the X100 has that little bit more connection with me. I guess working through the quirks and I really spent time with it. X100t is definitely an improvement but owning it, I didnt get the same excitement when I first lay my eye and put my hands on the x100.
After writing all the above, I do miss the X100 but I don't regret the decision and x100t follows me and get its use and miss less shots due to AF
🙂
