Juan .... don't be so sure that the feeling is not felt by people that are not her son ... we all have mothers and i think it is a great shot and it inspires me to dust off my XA and see where it leads me

maggieo, it is so very true what you said: photography has lots of things to give us, both when we are able to get what we wanted, and also when we can not achieve what we dreamed of... Wise words!

For me the XA together with a small tripod could be a night camera (although the viewfinder is rather small and dim), however the need to stop down to at least to f/5.6 and longest exposure time of about 4 seconds does not make it a very good candidate for me ...

There's too many carefully posed and boringly similar pictures in this world. Spontaneous ones win every time and that's where the XA etc excell.

Just chiming in on the XA. Yes the patch is almost invisible, the little winder folds up on me half the time and the shutter is so quiet I'm never quite sure it went off. But, it's the best travel camera hands down. I've got two little kids and when we're out and about the XA always comes with. I can take it out of my pocket, shoot it one handed and have it back in seconds. I can even do it holding my two year old in the other hand!
I've gotten some priceless family shots in all sorts of locations because the XA is so handy. The 1D DSLR is an incredible camera but portability is not it's strength. The M3 is close but the XA beats them all when you want a real camera that's real handy, real light and real simple. I even like the built in vignetting! It eats everything from Tri-X to drugstore Fuji C41 color film and makes it all look good.

You are no doubt aware of an old French proverb which insults the Spanish: "Life is like a Spanish inn. You only get from it what you bring to it."
Ignore the insult. Cameras are the same. You get from them what you bring to them. My mother died of cancer in '73. She was 45. Give your mother a hug from me, a total stranger to her. Anyone who ever loved their mother can appreciate (deeply) both the story and the picture.

Dear Juan,
That was wonderful. Next time you speak to your mother, tell her that her hug brought tears to my eyes. My mother-in-law (to whom I was very close) died aged 91 in 2003. That's the first mother's hug since then...
EDIT: As I just said to Frances, this is the best of the internet: simple, shared, universal human feeling. We see so much of the worst that the best is, as the Bible says, 'beyond rubies'.

I will tell mom you received her hug... Life is a neverending mystery, we start walking it thinking we have it all yet to come, and suddenly one day feeling so young we see it has indeed passed... Then we start to feel real love for others... I'm sure the biggest mysteries will surpass our sweetest dreams in the end... Whenever I see my parents pass away, I'll be living the rest of my life ready to follow and see them again in some way... Until then, this magical world deserves all my respect, fascination and love, thanking the gift of receiving loving words like yours... Thanks again!
