Hi,

Can anyone point me in the direction of an inexpensive alternative to XOONS, lenshood for 50 Summarit. Something not too bulky would be best.

I assume the XOONS price is driven by rarity?

heavystar lenshades are unexpensive and readily available, and they are desgined for RF use with holes in the baffles. you may find it on ebay. they're available in several screw size.

Hello,

@Stephane, i think heavystar does not make them with the 41mm thread as used on the Summarit.

@Michael, i am using an adapter from 41 to 49mm and a short shade with 49mm thread from B&W on my Summarit. Works well. also allows me to use 49mm filters.

best regards Fritz

Michael,

Another relatively inexpensive hood that works is the folding barndoor style SOOPD made for the Summitar. I picked one up for $19 within the past year. I got the version with the set screw. You also may have to remove the inner band that the set screw tightens against from the hood to make it fit. That does mean you are tightening the set screw against the frame of the lens or filter if one is mounted which could nick the finish if that is a concern. It is uglier than the XOONS, but the folding sides serve as a lens cap and I can use it on my 50 collapsible Summicron.

I would say price of the XOONS is based on rarity and some think it is a really nice looking hood. Plus, to minimize flare the Summarit really needs a hood. I have not seen near the number of XOONS available as there are Summarits. I do have a XOONS, but it stays at home sometimes.

My Steinheil Quinon also has the Summitar threads. I have a few filters for it plus an empty filter ring. I use at least the empty ring with a 12585 hood clamped on. Not meant to be used this way but it works perfectly.

Damn! You inquiry was about Summarit... Isn't there a hood like the 12585 for 41mm thread?
The bartender has replacement hoods...

12585? Doh! I think I have a 12585 somewhere that I use on a 2.8 Summaron...or was that 12545..will check the box of bits this evening.

Michael (Summarit)

fyi, if anyone is interested, the UV filter from a 65mm Elmar fits a Summarit...

Shame, the hood I thought was a 12585 H turns out to be a 12538 in a 12585 box. This is what I use for the 2.8 Summaron. Doesn't fit the Summarit.

BUT, the lenshood from a Bolex 8mm P series does!

Sorted,

Michael
