I'm asking the question as I wait for delivery of my Xpan and lens from separate sources...

Is the 49mm filter mount on the Xpan 45mm lens compatible with standard filters? Since my main use is going to be with Velvia 50, I'd like to put on an 81A warming filter.

Has anybody been doing this? Would love to see photos, too, if you have any.

Thanks.

With slide on Xpan vignetting may occur from f9 upwards (f8 should be fine) without center filter - slide film only!
You may of course use any kind of 49mm filters.
It is stated in instructions manual, which is available for download on the internet.
When I use to have Xpan I did use slide film and didnt have the center filter. I was careful to use f8 max with the slide film with no vignetting - UV or Skylight filter attached.

That center filter is hard to find and pricey. Does anyone make a viable substitute?

I'm sure everyone has already seen the French site "Passion Xpan". It has a very useful comparison of the vignetting at different f-stops for each of the Xpan lenses. http://xpan.free.fr/filtre.htm
The author mentions preferring to go without the center filter on the 45, esp. given the cost.

I'm glad to know that other regular filters can be used...

From my experience there is enough DOF with 45mm lens at f8.
Look at the dof scale once when you receive the lens - it is more like large format 45mm lens dof then 135 45mm lens dof..

I think the best thing will be to shoot with it first, see what that's like, and then look for a center filter if I feel it's necessary.

There are definitely going to be times when I need f/4, but vignetting can work sometimes, too.

if you intend to use the lens hood, make sure you buy a filter with a circumference small enough to accommodate it.
