XPAN Transformed

Neat I didnt think stereo cameras were being made anymore. I never looked though.

What environmental issue did the xpan have?

It says on several websites I have read, including dpreview I think, that certain substances used on the XPAN circuit board do not comply with some EU environmental rules, don't remember the details. The commentator then said since XPAN is not making mega bucks for the company, it could not justified the cost of re-engineering the circuit board.

I am not sure whether the contract will force Fuji to cease production of the TX-2.

Discontinuance of the XPAN

Discontinuance of the XPAN

The reason given for the demise of the XPAN line is the use of lead based solder on the circuit board. This is, of course, nonsense.

The solder could have been modified to a non-lead based material, and so the great E.U. Commission on Solder Content would have been satisfied.http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

The real issue is the slow sales of the camera. It is a shame that this great film based camera is another victim of the digital age.

I use digital cameras very often, and I understand that economics are a very important concern to manufacturers.

But, Hasselblad, at least be honest, and state the real reason for the cancellation, not just some P.R. copy.

xpan is a copy of a p3-prototype (p as a symbol of praktika or panorama?)kamerawerke noble showed at photokina some years ago. i had the non-working camera in my hands. i dont know if it ever worked. a wonderful color-prospectus showed a unique multiple-use-camera. body was target 5000 dem. 24x36, 24x70 and 2x 24x34mm(stereo) was possible with lenses from 35mm to 100(if i am right). prisms used to change stereobase. its a pity i had not been contacted at that time, since i have learned that further developemnt had been stopped due to lack of 3d-stereo-knowldge. they did not know how to use those stereo-images. but i had researched the net and have found endless amounts. these day its actual like never before. even 3d-lenticular prints are possible from such dual shots. in 3d-stereo-news i have learned recently that price of the komamura 38mm stereo-cam is not yet fixed. those 5000 usd i have reach earlier would certainly not help to make it succesfull. 1500 usd would do.

The circut connnectors contained lead-based solders, and 'blad was unable to find a suitable replacement. Thus, the death of a camera.

Well, it is a problem of epidemic proportions, toddlers and even young adults chewing on the circuit boards inside our cameras 😉
