Yashica Lynx question

I've got a Yashica Lynx 14e and the apeture ring just floats along without "snapping" into place like say my Nikkor for example. Is this normal or do I have a problem?

I can see where to set the film speed and this works well, does this have a bearing on the ap setting? I loaded some 400 speed film and the film setting lever is at F8. Is this the way the camera sets actual apeture and am I locked into this apeture or should I be able to set the ap like any normal lense?
 
Hmm, I'm not really sure whether your camera is broken - at least on my Lynx 5000 there are no click stops for the aperture rings, it can be set anywhere; and if I change the shutter speed, the aperture also changes (keeping a constant EV - a 'feature' found on many cameras of that period); when I change the aperture, the shutter speed does not change; changing the film speed is done totally independent of the other two settings, with a little lever on the lower side of the aperture ring.

Check again if everything is working like that!

My 14e does not have a click-stopped aperture ring. It works just fine --- I splurged on a CLA from Mark Hama (about $70). The shutter speed ring, on the other hand, makes a cool whirring sound when you nudge it toward the 1/500th sec. range --- I understand that this is also normal.

The shutter itself is so quiet that it is virtually inaudible, even to the photographer!

By "floating" I meant that I can rotate the 14e to any apeture number. I also have a Lynx 5000 that is non working and the ap rings do the same. The Electro 35G has the ap ring that "snaps" into each apeture.

I guess the thing I need to do is shoot it using my light meter and go from there.

OK, then everything is normal - the Lynx differs from the Electro in that it does not have click stops (what you called 'snaps') for the apertures - many older cameras & lenses did not have them - makes it easier to set intermediate apertures, but on the other hand it is more prone to accidentally changing the aperture setting...

Hi,
My yashica lynx 14e's aperture ring also floats around and does not set the aperture. The aperture is always set to 1.4 regardless of setting on the ring. Greyhoundman mentioned that aperture lever has jumped its notch and lens disassembly would be required. Any further tips/hints about doing it? any diagrams/repair manuals available?

The Lynx aperture ring does not have click stops and can be set anywhere. Set the shutter speed to Bulb and hold down the shutter release and move the aperture ring and you should be able to see the iris close down and open up as you move the ring one way or the other.

The Lynx 14E has a Copal SVE shutter. This shutter does NOT have click stops for the various apertures. It is "infinitely" variable, and that's one of its beauties. You can set it wherever, for much more precise aperture adjustment.
