Here's a narrow question... Yashica made a nice metal hood for the Electro. It slips over the lens and a small thumb-screw holds it in place.

Q: What's the thread size of that thumb-screw? Got a hood with a bent screw and the head broke off when I tried to straighten it.

And... For this camera, made in Japan around 1970, are the screws metric or US standard?

In US sizes, it looks like it could be 2-56; it's much smaller than 4-40 and bigger than the screw in a glasses repair kit.

Thanks in advance.

When I started to measure the set screw in my hood for you, I found that the screw has a stop that prevents it from coming out all the way (and being lost). Thank you again, Japanese engineering.

By turning the screw out all the way, I was just able to get my calipers in between the hood and the head of the screw. It is 2.5 mm in diameter. When I turn it out all the way, 3 1/2 turns, using a shim I can measure the length of the exposed thread at 1.4 mm. That's a 0.4 mm pitch.

That's the closest I could get. Hope it helps.

After I wrote the above, it occurred to me you may have trouble getting the screw stub out because of the stop. And the collar on the inside appears to be riveted in place, so no way to screw the screw through to the inside.

Good luck!

Unless you really need to use the original hood, if you get a screw mount one, make sure it is only about 18mm deep. That should match the OEM hood nicely (gotta watch out for that vignetting). I got one that has the grooves on the inside of the barrel, and happened to have a 58mm Yashica snap cap (from one of the SLR lenses) that fit it perfectly. That cuts out the light getting to the meter on my GL (same for the MG-1), and it looks like it came with the camera. I also don't have to remove the hood then when I put the camera back in the bag.

nparsons, you can push the inside collar out of the way (it will spring back) and twist the stub on through.

ZeissFan, yes, there's rubber, but I like the metal.

farlymax, right, a wider hood blocks the viewfinder and the light sensor for the meter on the Electro. I would love to find (or make) a vented hood for the Yashica Electro (55mm filter thread), but I have not seen anything close.

Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. I'm going to continue to try to rehab my Yashica metal hood.

Richard, the hood I am using is actually for a wide-angle lens. Since it has such a short barrel (18mm), it works perfectly on the GL. I've been looking for vented hoods in 55mm also, but I don't think they are out there. I did get a 46mm one for my Yashica ME, and all the other compact cameras I have. I basically set up a bag for 46mm, and just swap out whichever camera I want to use. Heavystar on eBay usually stocks a good variety of different size hoods. And I tried some of those 'flower' type hoods, but the ones I got were junk plastic, and would not stay on the lens.
