yashica slr - is anybody like them?

I bought a Yashica FX70 quartz at a boot sale for £5 recently. As usual, the covering had turned into a slimy mess so I recovered it with leather from an old handbag. The light seals were gooey so I replaced them with the light trapping material from an old film canister. You can buy a bespoke recovering kit on Ebay for $12 which just needs glueing on. The meter in my example is spot-on and the Yashinon 28-85 lens that came with it is first class. Even though I have better quality cameras, this one has become my favourite SLR. It handles so well and the macro facility is really useful.

Yeah, I have so many old cameras that sticky light seals is sort of the norm. In the case of most SLRs it's pretty straightforward to repair everything with medium weight black yarn in the door channels and cut pieces of adhesive backed black felt to seal the sides of the doors and create new mirror bumpers.

Probably not the professional way to do things, but I'm still using the same piece of 12x12" black felt I bought three years ago and the same little ball of black yarn.

All you need is lighter fluid, q-tips, toothpicks, and patience.

The original goo makes a really good glue to hold in the yarn ;)
