Hey all -- so I just picked up my first TLR and the start to my journey into MF, a bargain Yashica 635 from KEH. It seems like it's in good shape, but every single scan from my first test roll has a black sort of triangle shape impeding into the lower right of the frame. In most of the pictures, it's identical in shape and degree of intrusion, and in the others, it's still evident but not as large. One picture (which I shot over my head so the TLR was upside-down) has it in the opposite spot (top left), which leads me to conclude the film-lab tech rotated the picture to the correct orientation.

I opened up the back of the camera and took a look, and nothing seems broken or out of order. The only thing that looks like it COULD potentially be the culprit is some knob on the left side, mid-way up, that sticks into the body. As the negatives will be mirrored, the upper left would equate to the lower right of the negative. Only thing is, I'm virtually positive that it's supposed to be like this, and have no idea how it could've been damaged in a way to make this stick further into the box than design, so that it blocks a portion of the light as the film is exposed.

Has anyone had a similar problem/have any thoughts/help?

Thanks,
~Spicy

You did a good job on that upside-down shot, and all the others (even the double-exposure looks planned). Only thing I can think of on your problem is maybe that is part of the 35mm adapter mounting arrangement, and needs to be retracted fully.

That location and look match the rewind thing so closely that it must be something with it. Play with the inner part a bit, check that it isn't unscrewed from a retaining post or such. Pull the outer knob and turn to see if it will catch in a position with less inner projection, etc.

From the manual for the 635:

"CAUTION: Before loading the film, make sure the 35 mm Film Rewind Release Button (27} is reset all the way into its original position."

is its original position slightly pulled out and retracted? The 35mm rewind knob is spring-loaded and set in a sleeve with a cut-out such that if you pull out and rotate it so the lines that normally slide into cut-out aren't aligned, it won't really intrude into the body. it doesn't seem all that permanent though (like if it's accidentally bumped and rotates, it'll be pulled back into the body)

Have 2 Mats but not the 635. Just wondering though, do you have partial 35mm parts in place while shooting 120? As far as I understand you swap to change format, if you want to go back you'd swap back. If you haven't seen one yet here is a pdf manual of the 635 and the kit on the later pages. Maybe it can help you to ID what is what inside there and its orientation. Good luck 🙂 Love my mats and have been debating a 635 myself.

I've got a copy of the PDF, and the part in question doesn't look like it's removable in any permanent/semi-permanent way, just that you rotate it and hope it doesn't slip back into the body-cavity.

Thanks for the help, guys. I'm guessing that this is the culprit and that by pulling it out and keeping it caught on the spring-loaded bit it'll solve the problem. I'll check when I develop the next round of negatives having tried shooting that way.
