After searching the entire planet for a series 5.5 filter, I got a call from a store very close by that they had found one for me, reasonably priced. I was over the moon, but at the store I couldn't get the filter to fit somehow. I double checked everything and I'm totally dumbstruck on why the filter didn't fit underneath the rubber hood. The rubber hood even says 5.5 on it, the filter was a Leitz series 5.5 Y...

Does anybody have any idea on why this is?

Nope, sorry. I could make a picture of the lens front and rear of the hood, but since it didn't fit, I didn't buy the filter. They'd hold it for me, anyway, in case I can find out what the problem is, so no worries.

Is the filter supposed to go into the recess, or does it sit on top of where the text is (does that make any sense?)?

If I remember right, you lay it on the front of the lens, partially covering the text. Then you screw the hood on. Assuming all this is for the 40 Summicron-C.

Anyway, the filter laid correctly, then, but the threads wouldn't catch at all. As if the filter was too thick...

Under the rubber hood. This puzzles me slightly. Series filters are normally trapped between two rings that screw together, or between the front of the lens and the (screw-on) hood or filter retaining ring.

Is the rubber hood a Leica piece? Have you tried pushing the filter into the back of the hood (it should be a tight but not very tight fit) and then screwing the hood in?

Yes, it's for the 40mm...

"the 40mm" ??? There are more than one.

Do you have the German "Summicron-C" or a Minolta "Rokkor-M" branded lens, either the Minolta CL version or the later Minolta CLE version. The Rokkors don't accept the Series 5.5 filters. They accept standard JIS threaded 40.5mm screw-in filters. Even if you have the Summicron-C, you have to be using the original Leitz hood. The Minolta hood for the Rokkor-M may fit adequately (the threads are slightly different) but it won't function as a retaining ring for the Series 5.5 filters.

I didn't want to write the entire thing: yes it's the summicron-c 40mm, the hood is the original Leica 12518 hood, I tried to push the filter in the hood, and the fit was snug but not too tight.

As far as "under the hood" goes: I mean inbetween the front of the lens and the hood... But that's the thing that doesn't work.

Interesting. I had a 90mm Elmar-C with a Series 5.5 filter (why did anyone think this was a good idea?) and the original rubber hood. Anyway, that filter fit under the rubber hood just as 'ferider' says above (just kind of sitting on the name/info ring). The inside of the hood seemed to link with the filter as I screwed in the hood, and thus kept it in place OK. I always wondered about the "right" way to mount the filter since this arrangement seemed ridiculous.

I wish I still had the lens, or I'd take some pix, or even video, for you.

I have just tken my 40mm out to check.

The filter is a S5.5 - Diameter 36mm, thickness 5mm

It sits in front of the front element of the lens and is held in place by the hood - 12518.

Now here is the odd thing. I have a Series 5.5 ring, Canada 11251. This mounts on the front of the lens but will not mount with the S5.5 filter in place. I have no idea what it is meant for because it only has the thread to mount on the lens - there is no other thread. It is, however, useful for mounting a 12528 hood - with a bit of re-engineering!

After a quite long effort and research to find filters (uv & yellow) for summicron-c and elmar-c at reasonable prices, I came to the clue that Series 5.5 filters is not an option.

But, even if they have different specification, it seems that the common E39 filters work just fine. They don't screw till the end, but they lock with security in font of "c" lenses.

Apart from this, their rubber hood are able to screw on the e39 filters.

I don't think that I have any serious reason to spend more time or money for ghost series 5.5 filters.

That's what I do too. I use a B+W uv filter on the 40mm Summicron-C, screwed in until it is tight (but not all the way) and then attach a screw in plastic hood to the filter. Works fine.

Using normal thread (x0,5) filters on summicron-c 40 is a bit risky. It doesn't screw to the end, so It's possible either to loose the filter, or have it stuck for good.
Heliopan still makes filters with proper thread (x0,75).
I'm not sure, but B&W probably makes them too.

I'm using for about 2 years e39 Leica filters (UV, yellow & blue) on both Summicron-C - mostly - and Elmar-C.

No failure or damage, yet.

For sure, accidents could happen, anyway.

I found a A36 filter, which is a 36mm push-on filter, which fits perfectly. I'm going to take a look at heliopan filters, too.

I have a set of Nikon e39 filters that screw onto the front of the Summicron-C with no problems. They are a litle unusual in that there is no front thread but thye have a tooth cut to help the fingers grasp them when screwing them on and off. I did some research as they were odd and apparently they were made by Nikon for their enlarger lens series.

I ask because you are using the hood with the added extension of the 39mm filter
plus the two unscrewed portions (filter to lens and hood to filter) since you don't screw filter nor hood completely

Here's what I found.

I found a filter in my Rokker original hood. It's a B & W - S 5.5 KR 1.5 5 mm high and 36 mm wide.

It dropped into the OEM hood on my Elmar C, sat flush and screwed on fine.

Hood for the Elmar should be no different than the 40.

Does the hood screw on without the filter?

Does the filter fit flush in the hood?

Rechecked my hood and it's a 12517

My Rokker is the 40 mm version of the Summicron
