However, my two favorite firms (Konica and Minolta) made what I thought at the time was a questionable move of merging and, promptly thereafter, leaving the photography business altogether (which, from a strictly-business POV, probably wasn't that bad a move, since they stiil exist). Olympus' woes are entirely self-inflicted, but the timing of this debacle couldn't have been worse. The dSLR market was already an uphill battle for them, and even though they've carved out something of a niche for themselves in the four-thirds market, things are still squeaky-tight. I'd hate to see them cry Uncle and call it quits.
