Your favorite camera that you do not want to buy?

We are living in the age of a lot of great cameras that can be had for not too much money even though it's also the age in which photography itself is losing its luster as an art. I never thought I would buy a Nikon Z and yet I recently did just that. And I actually love it. So I don't think I'll say I wouldn't buy any of the currently available cameras (given enough money to afford it).
Same here: I didn´t want a Nikon Z, but needed a body for the New Petzval lens I wanted. And I love it, too, almost regretting the D780 I had bought not too long ago.
So that´s the opposite: Bought a camera I never wanted, and stick to it.

My favorite camera that I don’t want to buy.

There is only one camera that I would love to have bought back in the day that I won’t buy now.

My first camera was a Minolta fixed lens rangefinder; ‘twas in the year 1976. It was a beater that somehow wound up in my hands and a friend showed me how a rangefinder worked… I wasn’t impressed. About six months later I bought a Konica T3 SLR; my mind was blown, this was photography. I used the T3 for quite a few years but life and work, marriage, divorce, priorities, competing hobbies, a second marriage… so many things… somewhere along the way all my photography gear went bye, bye.

A little later in life, my career doing well, my second marriage doing very well, some extra money in my pocket and I bought a Canon F1n… I was so pleased with that camera; I loved that camera. About that time I started buying my film at Yodobashi camera in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Visiting Yodobashi camera was like visiting a photography museum; they had everything, hell, they had view cameras, they had it all! Such wide eyed days, I miss those days.

Well, one day I was in Yodobashi camera and I saw a Zeiss Ikon rangefinder in the display case. It was expensive. It was small. I remembered my old Minolta rangefinder and I thought why would anyone pay that much money for a camera like that?

Fast forward to today: I wish I would have bought that Zeiss Ikon rangefinder back then. I wish I had bought it then and that I had it now. But, things being what they are, I don’t plan to try and find a minty fresh one today just to bring back old memories that I’ve already said goodbye to.

However, if anyone wants to give me one for free, I’ll happily take it!

All the best,
Mike
