Your thoughts on Nikkor 50/1.8 AI-S Japanese pancake version

Based on this thread I dug out my old metal Series E lens to try on the GFX 50R. These are uncropped.

Interesting! So the image circle covers the "fuller frame" GFX 50R sensor?

According to Nikon's The Thousand and One Nights No.60, the Japanese market pancake (subject of this thread) and the Series E are "sister lenses designed with the same basic optics, but different outward appearance and coatings." The Series E was released first in December 1978, and the Japanese market pancake came a bit later in 1980. In any case, Shawn's examples show that both lenses are fantastically sharp, even on a modern high resolution sensor! 😀

Definitely covers it, much better than my Nikon 50 1.4 K, and is pretty sharp except in the extreme corners where it smears a little. This was just to look at sharpness.

Full size SOOC, think this was f11. Might need to click on image to see if full size.

That shot also responds really well to Topaz Sharpen AI.

I took the same shot with a Minolta 45mm f2 pancake and it covers but has quite a bit more smearing in the corners.
