Zeiss Distagon T* 1,4/35 ZE and ZF.2 announced

My first thought was "wow". But then I read the specification. This lens is HUGE. 830g and a length of 120mm. The Canon 1.4/35 weights 530g at a length of 86mm and it includes an AF.
My experience with manual focussing with my 5D is not so good. Through the viewfinder I can't focus properly with the standard screen.

This lens in c/y mount is amazing, also huge. I've seen a few adapted to canon and nikon bodies and they give great results. It will be interesting to see how this lens will hold up against the original. I don't find these remakes as pleasing as the originals, the quality and rendering has changed slightly.

Just bought a 35mm f2 distagon in ZE mount for my 5d, but I knew this was coming. Looks huge and will probably be amazing with IQ.

The previous contax/rollei distagon 35mm f1.4 was amazing though - some of the samples I've seen make a canon 35L look rather plain.

I've been wanting a "character" 35mm for my 7D, maybe this will fit the bill, although it does sound rather huge.

Unfortunate news is that it is so HUGE and HEAVY. The new 24mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.4 are smaller and have AF-S. I guess we'll see how it's priced...

Holy cow! You could probably carry the entire Yashica 35CC in its lens pouch, and that comes with a 35/1.8 lens...

Intriguing! I know they are significantly different, but this lens might compete against the new Nikkor 24mm 1.4 for my (very eventual) dollars.

The opening paragraph of the press release is hilarious!

"A woman is sitting at the bar of a dimly-lit cafe. Lost in thoughts, she doesn’t notice the glass of wine the bartender places before her. From a distance, a photographer tries to capture her mood. He brings her face, which is leaning toward her phone, into focus. Everything around her becomes a blur, and the lights in the background coalesce into a wild “dance” of diffuse shapes."

Hey... I've been to that bar...

It will become a 50mm-'ish lens on your 7D, no?

Yeah, it will be about a 50. I've gotten used to that on my R-D1/35mm1.2 combo, which has served me well for travel (in combination with a 15mm). I've been seriously considering picking up a 5D Mk1, you can find them for under 1k now and I could just use a 35 as a 35....

When I read that "romantic" intro about the woman in the bar I though how commercial the whole OOF thing is becoming... I mean it's a masses thing now even for digital point-and-shoot users: common people want OOF backgrounds more and more... A few friends (not photographers nor hobbyists) have asked me about it in the last three months, and I saw a recent small sensor digital camera TV commercial talk about it as one of the great things that camera and its lenses offer... Interesting...

Cheers,

Juan

She slipped the photographer a roofie?
