One could just put a Voigtländer 15/4.5 SL lens on a Nikon D700 and try it out. The lens is the same, and the sensor is full frame.

Agreed. Or better, take one of those:

Take a photo, measure fall-off and see. Cheers,
Roland.

This topic comes up now and then. Early on, I think we got the sense that it was "when" and not "if."
Carl Zeiss AG has been quiet on this issue, but I think that they are not the type of company to let things slip out, although it has happened here and there.
I would think that they are continuing to evaluate the technology, as well as consider market conditions and the global economy (some people are actually struggling to make ends meet), currency markets, investments, etc.
I think that the current sensor used in the Nikon D3(x) and the D700 seem to have excellent performance.
The company's film camera obviously caters to a niche audience, and a (higher priced) digital version probably would involve an even smaller group of users. Or maybe more, because it's digital.
In any case, I don't believe it would be Cosina's decision as to whether Zeiss would make this camera, as Cosina is only the contract manufacturer. It could choose not to make this camera, in which it might fall back to Zeiss to find a company to assemble the final product (Sony, perhaps?). But Cosina would not have any approval or veto rights about Zeiss deciding to make a digital product.
That is, the current Zeiss Ikon product is a Zeiss product. You won't see Cosina's name anywhere on the packing, the product or the literature.
