I’ve had the Zeiss Ikon (Beautiful black) for about a month now and all has been well. I love using this camera, the long baselength and viewfinder makes all the difference for me. Anyway, one of the things I really like about the Ikon, which is different from any camera I’ve ever handled, is the well damped meter activation. Unlike most cameras I’ve handled, which require a gradual half press of the shutter to turn on the electronics, there is a firm well damped stop, almost a click, halfway through the shutter press on the Zeiss Ikon that activates the meter. I remember being pleasantly surprised at how distinct it feels. A clear press right after this damped stop trips the shutter nicely. It makes turning on the meter and tripping the shutter two distinctly different things.
Anyway, after moderate use, I drove to the park one day with the camera around my neck. When I got out of the car and began to frame I noticed the damping was gone. 😱 The shutter release now has one distinct travel and what really sucks is I almost have to trip the shutter to get the meter to turn on. Sometimes I have to tap the shutter release several times to get the meter to show up. The meter still works perfectly, it's just slightly harder to get it to show up. The camera hasn’t been jostled badly or mishandled any worse than any other camera I’ve had, and I don’t jam my finger into shutter buttons.
So my question is of course, can this be fixed? Is it mechanical? Electronic? Could something have been knocked out of whack? Anyone else had this problem? Is it something under warranty? I bought the camera from Popflash less than a month ago which was smooth and a pleasure. I emailed popflash a few days ago and asked these same questions but haven’t received a response back yet. I’d be tempted to take off the top plate to have a look underneath but I don’t want to violate any warranty. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.-Jeff
