Now that my Leica R4 has arrived, I'm in search of a nice lens. I like the Zeiss lenses (50mm for example) or around that focal length. From what I've read, the lens needs to be '3cam' What are my options for lenses? Does Zeiss make them for the R4? Thanks.

To my knowledge there are no Zeiss lenses that will fit your camera. You would do well with a Leica 50/2 Summicron. Three-cam has been the standard for quite a while, but most listings will specify.

If you are committed to having Zeiss options, they exist for Contax, Nikon, Pentax and Canon SLR bodies.

IIRC the 15mm Super Elmar-R was a rebranded Zeiss Distagon, so there was at least one Zeiss lens with R mount. But the new ones are a different matter. Besides, the whole point in getting a R body is to be able to mount Leica lenses - if you are after third party lenses, the corresponding Minolta would work just as well or even better, at a fraction of the cost.

Just make your readings in stop down mode. Push the button in, make your reading. I did it for years with an R4 and 2 cam SL lenses.

some of the summicron 50 lenses I've seen on the bay are not too bad. I will look further into it. thanks.

Interesting....did not know this....I'm really not at all famiiar with this R4. I bought it out of ....GAS!

Leitz shot themselves in the foot with those damn cams. First one cam lenses, then two cam, then three cam, then they went to one cam but it was the third cam, not the first cam. Of course for "a nominal fee" you could get cams added to your older lenses, just like now you can get your old M lenses "coded".
