My first slr, and it is still in mint condition. I still use it occasionally until recently when I managed to jam the film wind on lever. That was when I had a remote release inserted into the release button.
I have visited tom tiger's site, but none of his suggestions have worked. When pressing the film rewind button, I notice that the shutter release button goes down at the same time. It looks as though the problem is connected with those two.
Any suggestions to help would be appreciated.

Was the release locked down, or just sitting in the socket? If you had it locked down, then you could have jammed the double-exposure preventer. You most likely will have to pop the top to get at the levers under the winder so you can reset it. Might also have to straighten a lever or two.

farlymac, Thanks for the prompt reply. The shutter button is not locked down, and by pressing my thumb on it I can turn it back and forth.
I had the bottom off, which was quite simple, but removing the top plate will be too advanced for me. Professional repair ? - too costly considering a 2nd hand E could probably be found at a relatively modest price.
I have very little knowledge of a camera's 'innards', but it does seem as though something is locked and jammed.

FWIW... It sounds like an inexpensive repair. Why not get a quote before making a decision?

Take the lens off, then bang the camera base down as hard as you can on a wooden table. Do it a few times and play with the levers.

There's a good chance it will start working.

So, what happens when you try to wind on the film? Is it stuck like waiting for the shutter to be released? Have you tried to release the shutter with the remote release or the self timer?

No, there was no film in the camera at the time. I had taken it out to 'exercise' the shutter a few times; although I then used a remote release cable, and with hindsight I think I pressed it twice without moving the wind on lever. Also tried using the self timer, but no success.
Bang it on the table ? I might give that a try as a last resort, after all the Zenits are very tough.

When you press down the film rewind button, the shutter button goes downward too. This is how it works on Zenit-B and Zenit-E cameras.

PF McFarland seems correct to me. The extended and locked down cable release interfered with the film advance and double exposure lock just as he described.
