ZI advance lever advice please!

Hi Guys,

It seems one of my recently acquired ZI has a film advance lever problem. I did not notice it first because I usually advance film in 2 short strokes. The problem is that one full stroke is not sufficient to cock the shutter, it still requires one small stroke of a few millimeters otherwise shutter and meter won't function. I feel some play in the lever as well, that does not show on the other body that works well.

The body is only a couple of weeks old and under warranty, but is this something I can fix by myself without sending back to the agent?

Update: I finished the film in the camera today. Funny that it doesn't have the problem when there is no film. I loaded a new film and the problem is back. Not sure if I should get it fixed as it seems to be just a minor annoyance.

I was hoping that someone might have thoughts on this. Mine behaves exactly the same way – needing one stroke to cock the shutter when there's no film, but the wind lever won't swing as far when film's loaded, so it takes two strokes when actually using the camera.

I've always just considered it to be a quirk, not a defect, but have never been able to compare it to another ZM Ikon. I've thought about starting a thread like this a half-dozen times, but, well…

I had a ZI. Not anymore.

With my previous ZI, never had any problem with the film advance lever. Unloaded or loaded, I can wind it with one cock.

Defect??? Never heard of this before for me to think that it could be a norm

FWIW, my Zi hasn't ever had this problem -- heavy use for two of the four years I've had it, but always one stroke (with or without film).

I've had one for about 3 years, and can't say I've ever experienced this either. I wonder if different films exhibit this, or if it's all films? I have noticed that some films seem to produce greater resistance than others....

Sounds like you should get the camera checked out. Its possible that the film advance is stripping gears because the tension is too high from the filim and because of that takes more times to wind the shutter mechanism/advance. You should send it to Zeiss New Jersey.

I am getting a new body from Zeiss at the end of the month. They said it is a minor issue but since it's a new camera they will replace it for me.
