It doesn't take hours for a lens to focus its rays to a point and burn a hole in a cloth shutter. I believe it's more like minutes -- and just a couple at that. The proximity of the cloth shutter to the film plane makes it very simple for the sun to quickly do its work.
Take your lens out on a sunny day and focus it on a dry leaf and see how long it takes to burn a hole in it. Now, the shutter is slightly forward of that, so it would take a bit longer, but not that much longer.
I don't believe this is urban photographic legend, as there are plenty of stories out there of this happening to unaware photographers.
The overall design of the Zeiss lens cap is mostly fine. The ridges on it, however, should be horizontal and not vertical. That would provide friction for your fingertips. As it is, your fingers tend to slide off the vertical ridges, especially with a lens shade attached, making it very difficult to get a firm grip. That part is poorly designed.
I have had plastic tensioned caps arrive broken. But they were only lens caps, so no big deal. Just buy another.
