It's time for these film shoots to hire off duty cops. The perps showed up w/ guns, so having a regular security contingent may not be helpful.

Of course this begs the question - there just was a robbery like this a week ago in the same neighbourhood. And yet they didn't think that perhaps they should take extra precautions this time?

Bingo, we have a winner

Dear Huss,

I'll add the following. Everything you ever do or say assumes a risk. At what point do you surrender your responsibility for the risk? For myself, the answer is never.

i'm just asking myself where this special gear, highly sophisticated and not consumer level will go. I guess not in a "normal" second hand market. Is it possible these robberies are made under order by somebody?

With these robberies becoming so brazen, frequent, and violent, in the same geographic area, surely a sting operation would be worth considering? At the very least, hide one of those tiny tracking tiles inside the camera?

Street crime is the main reason I've become very selective about when I take my higher value gear out. I'm prepared to defend myself, but the aftermath would likely be brutal.

Wow, a local group gets robbed. That's unique. This group of robbers seems well connected since they continuously find the goods. It's not easy to just drive around and find expensive equipment.

Apparently Detroit is the number one on that forbes list.

Ive never felt weird taking expensive gear to swap meets (that are even advertised on the side of the road) in Detroit.

You could say the swaps have been held in questionable areas... its cheaper.

Still Im sure it happens.

I know. Still, Oakland is special, It's the 3rd most dangerous city in the country (https://www.forbes.com/pictures/mlj45jggj/3-oakland). Your generalization based on a reported theft on Twin Peaks is wrong.

"On Tuesday, a KTVU news van was broken in to while a reporter and photographer covered a story in Oakland.

And earlier this month, two television crews were targeted by armed thieves while covering the fatal shooting of Kathyrn Steinle at Pier 14. One cameraman had a handgun pointed at his head."

The last one was a block from the Hall of Justice, the SF Court House I believe.

Lots more. Just Google: "camera theft san Francisco". I didn't expand the search to "sf bay area".
